Well, after all the hassles and waiting around to get the K1 I can hardly believe what an easy day I've had today. I've been in the States for two weeks now but I've decided to give the Social Security Office another day or two before seeing if I'm in their system so I don't have an SSN yet. In the meantime I thought I'd see if I could get anything else done...

First I went to the DMV office to see if I could get a State ID card. The smiley lady :) was happy with just my passport with I-94 and my temporary medical insurance which showed a) my name, B) my address on the envelope it came in (lucky I'd kept that envelope!). She took my picture and printed out a temporary ID card. The real one will be in the mail in a week.

I then went to the bank to see what would be needed in order to open a bank account and the smiley bank official :) told me that I could open an account right on the spot without an SSN. I almost fell off my chair because I thought I wasn't going to be able to do any of this stuff without that pesky number. Gave him my passport and brand new temporary State ID which includes address, height, weight (ho ho) etc, ran out to the ATM for some cash and I now have a US bank account, cheques and a debit card in the mail. I almost wonder if he was actually allowed to do it but I wasn't arguing  . When I get my SSN I just have to email him, he'll add it to the account and at that point I'll be allowed to apply for a secured credit card. I just love Montana! (L)

Hope everything else goes as smoothly!

HOORAY!

Yes they can open a bank a/c for you without SSN - when I opened mine (also without SSN) they made me fill in a W-9.

Sounds like a good day all round!

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

Yep, I even managed to be added as a joint user on my hubbys even before marriage or me moving to the USA! Hooray to Union Bank I can tell you that!

We now also opened a college savings account for our boy, wanted to start as uni or college will come sooner than expected I'm sure!

I will soon attempt for a credit card myself, hope that comes as easy, but first hubby is adding me to some of his.

Funny how a silly checkbook and debit card can make one so happy yet back at home I didnt think twice bout it....

And isnt it just lovely to have your weight added to your State ID ..... I walked out of the DMV offices and looked at it, and said to my hubby ' by the time I get a full time drivers license 60 lbs has to be knocked off off this!' and after ordering that gym stuff.... which should be coming soon.... I sure hope I get lucky and it works out....!!!

Hey, congrats on a good days work ;)

Never email your SSN!!!!! :no::no::no:

Email is not secure. Everybody and their brother reads it and it is the key to your identity. The latest facts are that the average person who has their identity stolen spends like $5,000 and 200 hours sorting out the mess. :crying::crying::crying::crying:

Funny story...

My wife Fi and I went to my bank to get her an account here in the States... We went through all the hulla-balloo... And she finally got an account (granted, with me as a "joint" person).

Later, she got the cheques and ATM card in the mail... Her name was spelled wrong.

We went back to the bank, showed the banker the cheques and the card, and asked for them to be fixed.

One week later... The NEW cheques arrive with her name spelled correctly... Then the phone call.

You can't have a debit card without a SSN.

Fi gets pissy with the lady saying that the bank had already ISSUED a card, and the name was wrong... 30 minutes later, after Fi saying: "Just talk to the manager, and call me back if you have to..." The phone was hung-up.

One week LATER... The card arrives... "Yay" we thought. Guess what... First time, they spelled her First name wrong (Foina instead of Fiona, I mean, what?)... Second time... Now our LAST name is spelled wrong on the card.

Gah!

So... Hopefully... We won't have to go through this all over again.

Congrats, by the way... It's always nice to have a "good" experience over here in the States... They seem to be so far apart!

I asked my credit union, and they said I'd be able to add Danny as a joint user, we just need to take his passport in. Hopefully it'll actually be that simple! I was also excited to learn that he will be able to get his Missouri driver license before he adjusts status! :)

Don't put all your money into this account. There are provisions in the Patriot Act that allow the bank to 'freeze' your account til furthur proof is offered. I have heard of this happening.

Jackie

as far as i know anyone can open an account over here without a ssn number, a non resident account, and all that is required is that you apply for a taxpayers identification number or tin. but usually the bank will let you open the account and when it comes tax time they want either a tin or ssn number from you by filling out that w9 form they send you. that is my xperience anyway, i am with first national bank

Weird! My credit union wouldn't give Claudeth a checking account until she gets a California I.D. They didn't care about the GC, they had to have the I.D. Stupid, won't accept a Federal document as I.D.
