The Gingrich camp thinks the punditocracy's got it all wrong. When asked by The Huffington Post about media coverage this past week, Gingrich press secretary Rick Tyler fired off a response blasting the political and media elite.

“The literati sent out their minions to do their bidding,” Tyler wrote. “Washington cannot tolerate threats from outsiders who might disrupt their comfortable world. The firefight started when the cowardly sensed weakness. They fired timidly at first, then the sheep not wanting to be dropped from the establishment’s cocktail party invite list unloaded their entire clip, firing without taking aim their distortions and falsehoods. Now they are left exposed by their bylines and handles. But surely they had killed him off. This is the way it always worked. A lesser person could not have survived the first few minutes of the onslaught. But out of the billowing smoke and dust of tweets and trivia emerged Gingrich, once again ready to lead those who won’t be intimated by the political elite and are ready to take on the challenges America faces.”

It's become an instant classic. John Lithgow read it as performance-art on Colbert. And then there is this:

John Lithgow rocks.

He does.

What's been amazing to me is that Gingrich got into such hot water with the GOP about his comments on MTP in the first place.

I watched the show last Sunday, heard him make the "right wing social engineering is just as bad as left wing social engineering" comment, and didn't really think much of it. He was taking a fairly moderate, centrist line. Didn't seem very controversial at all. Then again, I'm not a conservative ideologue who considers it heresy to break party ranks. Is this really the "Democracy" and "Freedom" that conservatives claim they believe in so much? That they excoriate one of their own just because he dared express a different opinion than their orthodoxy? Look, the extreme left is no better, they are equally PC. But it's particularly amusing coming from the Right, with all their holier than thou talk of individual liberty. I guess that only applies to the liberty to agree with their world view.

Reagan would get heckled from many on the Right if he were running today.
