Hello VJer,

Please please, give me as much information as possible.

My residency started on June 8th 2006. I aplied 85 days before June 8th 2011. (March 14, 2011), My priotity date is March 22nd 2011. I had my interview this week and I was apprroved right away. They said that they have a oath ceremony every friday.

The thing is seems like I have to wait until June 8th??.. (Is it true??.. The officerdidn't seem to know for sure, so I wanted to make sure I have to wait, because if not, then I will try to get a sooner oath ceremony)

The officer that interviewed me was soooooooo nice.. But he seemed not to know whether he could schedule me for a the nearest oath ceremony of if he had to wait until June 8th before I have my oath ceremony. Do you guys know anything about that??.. (Do I really have to wait? I thought the only requirement was to wait 90 days before the 5th anniversary to apply, I did not know they could give you your naturalization before the 5th anniversary? Even if everything else is ok??????/

Again, my timing is important for me because I have a professional international conference in Rome soon (So I need to apply for my passport) and on top of that I need to apply for my fiance. So really, the earlier I get my citizenship, the BETTER!..

Please no judgments, just tell me if I can get that done before June 8th.

Thank you very much.

To my understanding you will have to wait until June 8, 2011 since it will be 5 years.

You are allowed to apply for citizenship 90 days before but cannot be sworn in until your 5 year anniversary. You were very lucky to have an interview so soon.

When is your conference? You can always apply for an expedited passport at the passport agency.

Your dates except for the years are very close to my wifes', except you had your interview about three weeks before your LPR anniversary date, she had hers two weeks after her anniversary date.

But she had to wait two months because of the oath policies of her field office, even though she already met that anniversary requirement date. Where it sounds like your field office will only make until the next Friday after your date making you wait only two days. So even though both of you sent in your applications at the same time, you are going to be six weeks ahead of her. Wouldn't complain about that, many had to wait months or even longer than a year between their interview and oath ceremony date.

Just like 55 mph means 55, with the USCIS five years means five years, not a day sooner. But with some of us, can be a lot longer than five years.

This is how it works with the DOS, absolutely no rush for my stepdaughters' passport, so didn't add the expedient fee. She received hers within the time frame of paying the expedient fee.

Yeah, I can get same day service if I drive to one big fat no parking zone Chicago. Why can't they move that to O'Hare that is much easier to access with parking?

Kissjo,

It seems like you only have about 2-3 weeks for your oath, which means you probably wont even need to apply for a passport at the passport agency. You can apply at the acceptance offices which mostly are the post offices and just pay the passport fee + $60.00 expedite fee, and if you want it mailed overnight, its another $12.

Good luck and let us know what happens!

It must be five years for the Oath Ceremony. In case there's no time you can travel with your passport, you don't need an American passport. For your fiance application yes, of course but not for the trip.

Lisa and Phil,

I think you are mistaken..Once the OP naturalizes (takes the oath), means he/she is an American Citizen and will be able to leave the USA but will NOT be able to enter USA without a US passport.

But one only becomes American Citizen after the Oath Ceremony. Even after interview (unless same day oath ceremony) one will keep being resident until his/her Oath Ceremony.

Mama Mia I think I wasn't clear, I meant if there is not time for her oath ceremony, not for getting her passport. :star:

I do not think you are mistaken, as I know for a fact that you are mistaken.

A US citizen is not only required to enter the US with a US passport. but also required to leave the US with a US passport. Since a US passport can be obtained in 3 hours (I got mine in 170 minutes), there's really no point in not getting one.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Bob my wife is Thai and I believe she can leave on that passport and return on her u.s. one. I know before she got citizenship she left on her Thai passport and upon returning entered on her green card. I think you only have to prove you can legally enter the country that is your destination but I may be wrong.
