ARLINGTON, Texas - It’s shiny, red and brand new. But can a $30,000 BMW really motivate students to attend class every day on time? The latest Arlington High School attendance figures suggest yes.

“Every time I thought about not showing up for school I just wanted the car. So I thought I might as well show up,” said Kaitlin Kelley, a senior.

District officials said the 2011 BMW 128i Coupe was donated by a local dealership through a school-community partnership.

Every six weeks students earned a chance to win the car by having perfect attendance, no disciplinary problems and no more than three tardies.

“We have over 20,000 entries so it’s been a great program,” said Leslie Jonston, the district’s spokeswoman.

For perspective, the state pays the district a certain amount of money for every student who comes to school each day. So far this year Arlington has received $500,000 more from the state than it did the previous year.

But 1984 graduate Angela Moore thinks the gimmick is a little odd. She said she had four years of perfect attendance with just her parents motivating her the whole way.

“Nowadays it sounds like they may need it from elsewhere, which is not necessarily the right thing to do. But that’s where our society has gone towards,” she said.

Does this include dragging students with, uh, infectious personalities from sickbeds so that they can hawk tubercular loogies at their classmates all day?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

How awful. Reward something that's supposed to be done anyway?

How about rewarding perfect attendance with perfect grades and a record of community service?

The reward is your acceptance into the nation's best colleges and universities with scholarships, grants, etc.

You work hard and you already get your pay day.

Well are you going to tell that to the dealership for wanting to add a little fluff to getting those scholarships, grants, etc? Its not like the tax payer is getting dinged for this.

Eh, it's only a 1 series, who'd want it anyway?

Accept it, sell it. Buy a fuel efficient car with the proceeds.

How unfair. Only one student gets the car. With the $500,000 in extra money, the district should provide cars for all other kids as well starting with the kids from low-income and minority homes first.

"But slim, they'll be out of money before everyone gets a car." True. I guess the white kids from middle class homes won't get one. No biggy though, their parents buy them cars already or they work to buy one themselves.

On second thought, this is a GREAT lesson on how the world works. Keep it up, Arlington!

Is there no non-white middle class where you live? That might explain why none of your posts on these issues make sense to me.

When I do a good job in my work I get substantial bonuses, they make up a large part of my annual income, usually more than the price of this car. Problem? They give that to me because it is fraction of what they save by getting work done better, faster, cheaper.

Applying the same type of incentives (or disincentives) to businesses would eliminate the illegal immigration problem

So it doesn't make sense to you that government intervention to help poor minorities costs middle class whites?

You can do simple math, right?
