Hi all. On a happy note, just sent out the complete AOS package today.

On a sad note, we went to our local DMV to apply for Soraya's drivers license and it turns out we're two days late, according to the rude staff there.

Her I-94 expired on Sep 6 and DMV says she's illegal and cannot get a drivers licence until she gets her status adjusted, which we all know can take a LONG time. They said if we came two days earlier she could have gotten her permit and then her license. We're so angry.

Is there any forms we can file for an extension, or anything we can do so she can drive sooner?

Any help is as always appreciated.

John

Does she have a license from her home country? If yes, she can use it until EAD becomes available.

The DMV told me if they have a license from their country they can use it and if they get pulled over then tell the officer either you are visiting or you are establishing yourself and doing AOS etc.

The lady at the DMV said nothing about an "International drivers license".

Who has an international drivers license? What countries give those? The UK?

I only offer advice - not even legal. Just the plain and simple kind.

shalz,

An 'international drivers license' is little more than a document indicating that you have a drivers license issued by your home country. I've seen some great debates on how important or useless they are here in the USA, the one thing that both sides agree on is that it's helpful as a translation if the home country is not an English-speaking one.

Most states will allow a visitor to drive on their out-of-state or out-of-country license for up to 1 year, but require new residents to get an in-state license within 1 or 2 months. They obviously didn't give a 2nd thought to the K-visa situation when they made those provisions.

On the theory that, although my wife had taken up residence in the USA, she was a visitor for state DMV purposes because the USCIS had yet to grant her PR status, she did as sarah and hicham suggest and drove merrily - but very carefully so that we wouldn't have to test my theory - with her foreign drivers license in her purse.

The only thing you have to be angry about is waiting until the last minute to do really important things.

Why, oh, WHY do people wait until the last moment to do this kind of stuff? Why is this?

Cheers!

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.
