Hey everyone,

I was wondering if my fiance would be able to see a doctor when she gets to the U.S. She has hyperthyroidism and I know she needs to see a doctor once in a while. I just want to be sure that she will be able to see one if something doesn't go well. I know once I marry her, that she will be able to be covered under my health insurance and it won't be a problem to see a doctor, but it will be just for the time that we aren't married. Anyone have any advice or experiences?

you can marry as soon as she arrives and she will be covered then. Otherwise you can pay out of pocket

Check with your insurance provider. My wife was not covered as soon as we married. She had to wait until the first day of the month after marriage. Many providers will not allow you to add a dependant mid month. My wife takes Synthroid for her thyroid problem and it took five months to get the dosage correct. She said that in the Philippines she was just told to take the pill and was never given follow up.

Prior to marriage, and coverage on your policy, you will probably have to pay for the Dr's visit and blood work to establish dosage levels of whatever medicine she takes.

I got strep throat my first week here in the US and we were able to book an appointment with a physician with no problem but we had to pay 100% of the costs (It was about a total of $130 for the doctor's fee and the antibiotics). Ugh!! Thank God I'm on Tricare now.. :)

We looked into some health care providers, and I think they key is to be married and have an SSN.. You should be able to sign her up with that.. I was able to apply for coverage the same month we got married, TRICARE had a 60-day period to add a dependent, but we opted for me to start this June 1st.. :)

Goodluck! :)
