So some of you might know that I have been struggling with my being Muslim "issues" with my family. My mom has been really hesitant to accept it and we have had numerous arguments about Islam and me becoming a suicide bomber (no kidding...). Well in the last few weeks I have decided to do hijab but have not been so comfortable with this in front of my family because I just don't feel they were ready for such a change. So here's what happened today. My sister just had a baby and asked me to go shopping with her so me and my son and her and the baby were going to go, but then her boyfriend also decided to wake up and go so we were just going to meet at the mall. My sister has seen me in hijab in Morocco but never in the US and I don't think her boyfriend has ever seen me in hijab (let me add he's a pretty big racist bigot - nice guy....) So my son and I get to the mall and start shopping for some jeans for him at Old Navy. We get what we need, check out and then he sees her and starts calling her name. So we walked over and she would barely acknowledge me, and it didn't take me long to catch on as to why. So Mikhail and I left to get some lunch. We were waiting in line for our food and there were only a few people around us. All of a sudden I hear Mikhail saying her name again. They had walked right past us without saying a word. There was no way she didn't see me or that she didn't hear my son. Well let's just say I was angry and hurt. This afternoon my mom called and I started to tell her the story and she was just appalled. Mind you she isn't too sure about this hijab thing but she couldn't believe my sister would act that way. So she started to tell me about her hair falling out. She's on some medication now for an auto-immune disease and she is losing her hair. So she said to me, "Well, maybe you and I will just have to wear our scarves together, and then I wonder if your sister will just ignore both of us." I couldn't believe it! She told me she accepts my choice and even wanted me to show her how to put a scarf on. I'm sad that this is happening to her but I feel like it's a relief that she finally is accepting of my choice. Alhamdulilah. So I just thought I would share a little happy story about family accepting your choices.

Wow! Despite the sh*ttiness of the situation, there is a silver lining. inshaAllah things will continue to improve with your family relations. Alhamdulilah!

If your mom is looking for some hats, I really like this site. I've ordered from them in the past and have been quite impressed. Plus, it never hurts to have them around when you need to be an undercover muslim (ie this coming monday).

Amera, I'm so sorry you had to go thru that but you are an inspiration to me! You are a strong person to be able to handle that kind of stress and you give me faith that I will be able to tell my family soon. Thanks for sharing your story. (F)
