There is nothing about 5 years. The obligation that you will have (and a joint sponsor also) is approximately 10 years, or until the immigrant can be credited with 40 qualifying quarters of employment.

Is your joint sponsor someone who qualifies as a household member? Definition: A relative who has the same principal residence as the sponsor and is related to the sponsor as a spouse, adult child, parent, or sibling If so, that person can complete the I-864A. However, if you as primary sponsor have little or no income (and assets) they may want the joint sponsor to stand alone with an I-864. Especially if that joint sponsor has other household members. Why? Because ultimately the adjudicating officer will want to see that there is enough there to support the immigrant.

See this FAQ from the State Dept. website about the I-864 for more information >> http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_3183.html

C_Maria I am still confused why you need to prove anything? Didn't you just get him in on fiancee visa? Do you need to continue to prove how much you make...or am I missing something?

Yes, after marriage (when entering on a K1) there is the adjustment of status where the I-864 affidavit of support is used. See the Guides section here on VJ to learn about Adjustment of Status.

Thank you Anh Map for that link, it has a lot of great info! I think I've got it through my thick skull, now!!! (at least this part, jeje!)

KimchiMex: We have a whole OTHER packet of stuff to fill out when we get them here! I made the mistake of not looking into it too much while I was concentrating on the interview and turns out there were a few doosies. It seems like in your case the income is steady so you'll probably get this faster than I did. But feel free to bounce things off me, we should have it all in by the time you guys get to it.
