We waited17 days to apply her ss card and the guy seemed real professional. He did not give us any problems and did the imput pretty quickly.

After he finished we were told to come back next day for the number (not the card) well we waited over a month now and still they have no number. I'm guessing he did not see her on the data base but proceeded

and I'm kicking myself for not asking. I had expected him to tell me if there was a problem and I should have checked his screen for errors so it's my bad totally.

What I would like to know is if we can get her a tax number and use that for the AOS form even though we've applied for the ss.

You've got a receipt when submitting your wife's SS-5, didn't you?

If so, go back to the SSA and inquire about the status, in person.

Yes, if you blow the relatively small window to get a SSN, which isn't good for much anyway, you'll have to wait until AOS has been processed, meaning either you have an EAD or the Green Card at hand.

In our state, PA, we need the social security card in order to get married. We can't adjust status without marriage, thus need the SSN to adjust. This must vary by state.

The requirement for a SSN in order to get married is state specific. I wonder if any state can actually require a SSN before marriage if one wanted to challenge that authority.

If you have the receipt from the SSA, go back and ask about the card and if a number has been assigned they will give you a print out with the SSN. The number is the important piece of information not the card. I think I have shown my card to about three people in 45 years--as long as you can rattle the number off no one cares to see the card. The resaon you may not have received the card in the mail is the wonderful USPS and their employees. Roza moved in in December. We we married December 30th. Applied for her SSN January 10th. No card. So we went back January 30th and received her number and had them mail the card to the local SSA office. Received card. In March I sent a card to our aparment with my office as the return address. The card showed up at my office. When I asked the local post office what was going on, they asked if her name is on the mailbox. I asked them where it states that that is a requirement and he just repeated is her name on the mail box. Long story short is that we expect the USPS to deliver properly addressed mail, but it may not happen all the time.

This is the reason K1 entrants are allowed to get an SSN before getting an EAD. Yes, it does vary by state.

Thank's Dave, I sent her for the number cuz the guy said it be there the next day but we waited about a month.

Yesterday she calls and they tell her she may need to refile. The card is a non-issue for sure but if I can get off work I want to talk to the guy and find out

if he failed to veryfy that she was on the list. Originally I was prepared to do battle with them after reading some of the stories here however he seemed curtious,professional and efficient so

my gaurd was down. I should have ask him if she was on the list yet.

What part of PA do you live in? We went to WV and got married the same day, no blood work, no

ss number reqired. A very nice Judge and a court house empolyee as a witness. 15 mins and your done.
