Hello,

I obtained an EAD and I have recently become a Permanent Resident with Green Card after the K-1 process.

I was hoping to go to my country(Ireland) to visit my family for a 2 week period.

I hope this isn't a silly question, but do I need to notify DOS? I have read about I-131, but each post I read is for people leaving for long periods of time. I am just looking to get a short definite answer.

Thank you in advance,

Dara

you have green card and current passport - no need to notify anyone.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Hello,

Please clarify whether you have your 2-year GC in hand. If you do, you can simply go to Ireland and return (a nice plus is that you will have re-cleared Immigration--but not Customs--before setting foot on the plane back).

No, for 2-week trip DOS has no involvement. By the way, I-131 is application for Advance Parole--which is for those in ongoing AOS proceedings, permitting them return to the US from a trip outside as signal to USCIS that the I-485 process hasn't been abandoned.

You need to notify your family in Italy that you're coming, assuming you want to see your family. Mussolini is dead, and you are over 18 years old now and a lawful permanent resident, so you don't have to sign in and out when traveling anywhere or staying out late.

You need your passport to travel, and you need your Green Card when returning to the US.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

+1 above.

With GC in hand (as well as passport) you're good to go.

The only prior notification required would be if you were leaving for more than a year. In that case, you would need file an I-131 to apply for [and then wait to receive] a re-entry permit first.

DON'T PANIC

-Douglas Coupland
