Hello everyone!

I need your assistance again. We're planning on going to the Social Security Office on Monday to apply for my wife's SS card. My wife is eager to go to the DMV the same day to apply for her learners permit. My question is, once we apply for her SS card, do they give us any receipt? ..and the receipt that they do give us, can that be used in a DMV office?

Urgent reply is appreciated, so she can study for her learners permit, even though it's ridiculously easy.

Thanks.

Does she have her greencard? as the SSN does not make you DMV eligible...

YMMV

I agree. The Key Word is Apply for a SSN. A reciept is normal. I think it will involve a waiting period to recieve the SSN Card in the Mail and not random to pick-up the same day.

Will DMV accept the receipt, along with the EAD?

I would say No. It's more of the waiting game. The Social Security Office is just like any entity of the Goverment. You have to File the Appropriate Paperwork and WAIT for an Issuance of A SSN (#) As a a USC you know that it never happens in ONE DAY. It's good you have the Paperwork to File Correctly. As a USC think. For a Momment: Walk into the SS Office and expect the Issuance of a number. Social Security Card: It is a separate Entity of the US Goverment and they Conduct their own Checks. Make Sense?

If and I say IF i'm I'm correct, a card and Number will arrive in 5 to 8 business days.

USCIS - SS Adminstration - DMV are SEPERATE Goverment Entities.

But, I hope my Post is WRONG and wish you Good Luck!

DMV rules vary from state to state. In which state do you reside?

Good question. In Kentucky you need a "blue letter" from the State that shows you have all the requirements and your visa status is good before you go to DMV. You must have a SSN and a card to get the letter.

Bogart - I moved your topic that started with this exact post to the Working and Traveling forum since this question seems to do only with work. I do not think there are temporary SSN copies available though.

The actual SSN will be required at the beginning of employment for the I-9; unless they want to run a background check, and in that case, you can explain what is the situation (and that there will likely not be much history if anything)

you will get a receipt but there won't be any number on it. the number will be generated and submitted to you printed on the SSN card. I guess the DMV wants the actual number, not just know that you applied to get one.

I would imagine they need the number. You can contact SSA to get the number before the card arrives. However, you should check with your state laws. Here in Florida, you must have the actual SS card, as they make a copy of it for their records.
