First of all, your congressman/senator may not care at all about immigration issues, so their inquiry might mean nothing. But those who do care will have an immigration specialist on their staff. Your first step is to call and ask to speak to this person--if they don't exist, don't waste your time, but if they do exist, talk to them and explain your problem--they do this every day of the week, and the USCIS people will know them by name, so the chances of a positive outcome are better--not worse. There will be a little bit of paperwork on your end, and then the specialist will go to work on your case. Just because they make an inquiry, however, doesn't mean that the outcome will be any different.

There is no downside--the result will be either neutral or positive, so make the call. Don't just write a letter or send an email.

No That is NOT TRUE... I did it with my petition with the help of senator...

but u have to be outside of the processing time in order for them to intervene...

the current processing time is about 5 months... so anytime after 5 months u can contact ur senator or congressmen...

Magical and digital82 are correct. I have seen an example of a Senator not caring from TBoneTX; he posted here that a senior aide to one of his Senator's told him, "the Senator has more important things to deal with than your visa petition."

Those who have contacted their Senator and had a positive outcome from the result of that contact can explain what they did.
