That's a pretty good list, honey_me!

I miss my UK cinema card. $11 a month for unlimited movies! We have Netflix now, but watching at home just isn't the same.

I last saw Midnight in Paris in the cinema. Such a cute movie. Really feel-good.

Super 8 was fun enough, but nearly every element of that movie has been done before, and usually in a better way. I thought the kids were excellent, however.

I recently downloaded Weird Science to share with my almost 12 year old son. He loved it, so I'm on to search for Pretty in Pink and all the other great films from my generation to share!

The John Hughes teen comedies from the 1980s were indeed wonderful and for me represent the kernel of that type of affectionate and relatable rite-of-passage filmmaking (before 'American Pie' et al irrevocably homogenised the genre into crass, contemptuous, misogynistic and conspicuously male-centric virginity plots).

You are probably aware of these already, but I'll say just in case: 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' and 'The Breakfast Club' are essential. For something a little more leftfield, and breaking away from the Hughes canon, 'Gregory's Girl' (Forsyth, 1981) is a really excellent film, with an endearingly idiosyncratic and understated deadpan tone.

A word of clarification for anyone who has difficulty finding this film - the correct title is actually: Transformers - Dark of the Moon.

Dark of the Sun is a little-known (but quite effective) 60s film about a group of amoral European mercenaries on the trail of a diamond trove in the African Congo who rediscover the value of human life amid the horrors of a brutal civil war. It stars Rod Taylor (known for his role in Hitchcock's The Birds and for The Time Machine) as Captain Curry!

There's also a fight scene involving a chainsaw that is quite nice.

I love chainsaw fights on film. Adding it to my file of B-movies I need to get around to watching.

Available for pre-order, but it's a print on demand release from the Warner Archive, so you can't rent it. If it helps your decision, it also stars Jim Brown (Mr Williams from Enter the Dragon)

Worth it for the cover art alone!

I know every word to The Breakfast Club. I've also watched St Elmo's Fire one too many times, there's a whole number of movies from that time period that I've seen too much of. I've never seen Gregory's Girl though, so really thanks for the suggestion, and I'll be sure to look it up!

Years ago, I went on a date with a pompous barrister who had us meet at a bar, even though he was teetotal. He was late, and I was antsy, so I ended up having a few before he even arrived. We had a singularly uncomfortable date, capped when he said, "People always say to me I look like an actor. Can you guess who?"

I peered at him, screwing up my eyes, and proclaimed, "I know! I know!"

He looked very smug and said, "It's pretty obvious, right?"

"Yes! You look JUST like the star of Gregory's Girl, John Gordon Sinclair!"

*silence*

"No, I look like Hugh Grant."

The date was soon over.

We can blame Porky's (1982).
