In the Land of Blood and Honey - directorial debut of Angelina Jolie. It takes place in the Bosnian-Serbian War from 1992 to 1995. I enjoyed it but it mostly covered the atrocities of the Serbs and barely mentioned the atrocities committed by the Bosnians. Both sides were murdering thugs in this war.

Did you ever see INK? I felt it was on the same futuristic, figure me out story, like 12 monkeys. It is on netflix if you have it...and it takes patience...because the beginning does not seem to make sense..then they sew it all up. Really a big favorite for me.
