"The Road" - chilling! Worth a watch though. Good acting!

I also read the book; the film kept pretty close to the mood/attitude of the book,

although it had to be condensed for the cinema.

I appreciated the flashbacks to the former happily married life in the movie,

otherwise it would have been too overly grim.

The Vinnie Jones Workout

Sometimes I see movies which are outside my normally sophisticated persona,

like "Locked Down" with Vinnie Jones, of "Snatch" fame.

This movie was rude & crude, with lots of mixed martial arts action.

Nothing cerebral here, but non-stop action. Normally I like movies

which show heroes with flaws and bad guys with some redeeming

qualities - this one had neither.

Once in a great while I like to see something like this; "Jackass"

is another example, but in a more light-hearted mood.

I watched the old version after my dad said there was no way the new one was better and...the new one blows the John Wayne version out of the water!

The only notable performances in the old version were by Robert Duvall (Lucky Ned) and Dennis Hopper (Moon). John Wayne doesn't come across as pitiless, but as a likable old man. Jeff Bridges had what was possibly the best performance of his career... even though "The Dude" was outstanding.

When the first "True Grit" came out I stayed away because I pretty much didn't identify with JW in those days.

As time passed I did check out various movies. One that impressed me was the Quiet Man, which kind of

put Wayne out of his element in one way but firmly rooted him in another:

I did see the original True Grit before seeing the sequel and I did enjoy the Jeff Bridges version more.

In it's time the JW version was an excellent movie.

I saw Bridesmaids yesterday and at first seemed like another crappy comedy... I ended up loving it. The scene where she (Kristen Wiig) gives her speech in Spanish was the best.

Thor is O-some! I thought it'll be all comic-like and full of action, but it was very entertaining, a lot of interesting scenes, comedy parts, and emotional story line, no to mention, a handsome bulky Thor!

Vanishing Point (the original from 1971). A true classic.

If you're willing to go back a little further than 1971 might I recommend Laura; film noir really keeps you guessing.

Labyrinth with David Bowie. I've been watching old movies lately Before this one I watch The Dark Crystal without knowing what it is and who made it - I was very impressed and now tracking Jim Henson movies.

Labyrinth with David Bowie. I've been watching old movies lately Before this one I watch The Dark Crystal without knowing what it is and who made it - I was very impressed and now tracking Jim Henson movies.

When I was growing up in the '50's I studiously avoided any films from the 20's, 30's or 40's.

My reasoning then was that they were too old-fashioned and passé.

Now I'm seeking out a lot of those old films, not because I've become an old fart but because

some of them have interesting stories to tell, especially the "film noir" genre.

I still can't stand the "Busby Berkley" type stuff despite the technical/optical wizardry,

but I do like to see Fred & Ginger, the original "Dancing With The Stars" stars.

It's incredible that she could do everything he could, but backwards and in high heels.
