Separate Approval/Complaint Forum?

Hiya, I'm relatively new, and I have a suggestion.

This site is wonderfully helpful and I've been very glad and grateful for all the assistance I've received, even if it's just the "Calm down, you're nuts" type! But there is one thing that makes it a little difficult.

I am applying for a K-1, and when you go to the K-1 Forum, about 75% of the posts are announcements of NOA2 or complaints about how the CSC is slow or announcements that there were two touches in a row. And part of the community, and what makes VJ great, is how everyone is supportive.

But it does make it hard to search or to find information, or to gain it when the new topic posted gets pushed all the way down the page so no one sees it.

So maybe we could have a separate Updates & Celebrations section? Somewhere that isn't Off-Topic, but frees up the K-1 (and other) searchability and also is just for the people who are past the NOA1 (who may be tired of the endless newbie questions.)

Thoughts?

Not a bad idea.

Although I would much rather see people make better use of the Advanced Search engine. That already exists, it works just fine. Many VJers do not like it because they find it difficult to use... so that is a user training issue. But that would be my preferred solution to the problem (the problem being that certain topics are difficult to find)... but I can certainly see the appeal in what you are suggesting.

The search engine is decent, but sometimes a bit problematic, like all engines, if you don't quite know what you're looking for, which is even harder when you're new and haven't grasped the lingo yet..

It's more that someone can post something saying "need help" and it disappears to page four within about 19 seconds that was my concern. ;-)

That's a fair point. I remember that happened to me a lot when I was a n00b!

Sounds like a good idea to me.

We could have like newspapers do.. Births, Deaths, Marriages and Announcements!

Seriously, very good idea

Here's a tip...because I don't think new forums will, or should be created for approvals/complaints... change the number of topics that show on each forum page to a higher setting. The default is 10, but you can set it to 40. You can also change number of posts showing for each topic page. Go to My Controls, Board Settings and then scroll down till you see the following:

Number of posts to show for each topic page

Number of topics to show for each forum page

This really is nice, especially in threads that get a lot of posts...you don't have to keep going to the next page! ;)

Your suggestions are great - just one thought - the recent slew of APPROVED!! postings are mainly because March and April CSC filers were at a standstill for such a long time. We are seeing so many of these postings now because they are finally moving again and they are approving all at once.

I think once March/April filers are cleared out, things will be a bit more back to normal on the K1 forum and you won't have as much difficulty seeing the more relevant posts.

I know what you mean, Frances, because I have mine set at 40 too. However, that will only help whoever has that setting to see that many posts...it still will let his post go unnoticed by those who don't have the 40-post-per-page setting. :) M.

yeah, I get ya...and maybe 40 should be the new board default...that's MY suggestion! heheh...

I just think those forums are precisely FOR approval and update notifications...
