the preparation of our evidence list encountered some weird annoyances, mostly due to bad timing. seek some advice here

1. we asked our bank to provide a verification of deposit letter with their official letter head. It turns out the bank is in the midst of merging with another bank, the new policy requires our bank to add an extra statement on their letter head stating "a division of <another bank>". But our bank is so cheap they just made one such letter head and xeroxed the rest (with a very bad xerox machine), so from now until they got merge, all the letter head from my bank are crappy looking blank-and-white xerox copies instead of in color. The bank employees swear to me that they are official...

2. statements of beneficiary. I have listed my wife as the primary beneficiary for many things, including retirement plans and life insurance. But, I just accepted this position less than 30 days ago, so all my accounts are actually 0 balance right now... does it matter?

3. tax transcripts... 4/15 is the tax day, and 5/15 is the first day of our I-175 90-day filing window. I sent the request for tax transcripts for the past 3 years, but I highly suspect the IRS will get these documents to me in time. Should I use my own copies of the tax return form for these 3 years, or shall I wait for a while for the tax transcripts?

For items 1 and 2 above, should I add some additional statements/letters to explain?

Thanks

1 - chase didn't give us a bank statement, they gave us a crappy looking piece of paper which shows both our names and the current balance.. the paper has no logo or anything, it just says chase written in a very simple font.. but i added a voided check which has both our names to support that piece of paper just in case they suspect it's homemade, lol!

2 - not sure, but is there a way to get forms/statements that just show both your names, no balances or dates showing?

3 - we use turbo tax so i just printed whatever we have on our online account.. i think it's like 8-10pages, i printed all to be sure..

gluck! :)

For #3, you don't HAVE to send your stuff the first day of the 90 day window. When I've ordered transcripts from the IRS, they usually take about 7-10days, so if you want to include them, I'd wait till they get there.

Our 90 day window opened on Feb 11th and we actually sent it on the 23rd.

I have a retirement account that I didn't even know that I had that has a whopping $4.00 in it - it was from a very short-term job. I got a statement for it just before we filed AOS and it lists my wife as the beneficiary. I brought it with the rest of our bona fides to our lawyer and questioned whether it would even be helpful at all or if it would just seem strange, but she said that the important thing is that it's an official account and lists my wife as the beneficiary - she said the amount doesn't matter. I would go ahead and include it.

AOS (from tourist w/overstay)

1/26/10 - NOA

5/04/10 - interview appt - approved

ROC

2/06/12 - NOA date

7/31/12 - card production ordered

N-400

2/08/13 - NOA date

3/05/13 - biometrics appt

6/18/13 - interview - passed!

7/18/13 - oath ceremony

IF there is an IRS office in your city, you can go in person, get them IN PERSON - takes about 30 minutes once you've talked with a human, face to face, at a counter.

Good Luck !

Thank you all for your very helpful and informative replies. I sent my tax transcript request a few weeks ago and so far haven't received anything. i am wondering if the budget scare had some effects to it, plus the tax day was just over and they are probably busy processing the tax return forms and couldn't care less about tax transcript requests? too bad we live in a small college town, and don't have a quick access to a federal IRS office.

I will probably wait for a few extra days when the 90-day window opens.

You can request your tax transcripts using the IRS automated phone system. 1-800-908-9946 As long as you are still at the address they have on file.
