New GAO Report Documents Low Level of Enforcement Against Visa Overstayers

By Jack Martin, FAIR Special Projects Director

The General Accounting Office (GAO) - which is supposed to be a bastion of non-partisan analysis of federal government programs - increasingly appears to be tip-toeing around the immigration issue in the face of a determined effort by the administration to appease the advocates of "comprehensive immigration reform" a.k.a. "amnesty".

In a report it issued on April 15 it documented the low-level of enforcement against visa overstayers, but mitigated that with giving credence to the Dept. of Homeland Security's (DHS) argument about competing priorities and that stronger enforcement efforts, such as modifying facilities at land ports of exit, could be so costly that such effort would be cost inefficient.

The report, titled "OVERSTAY ENFORCEMENT: Additional Mechanisms for Collecting, Assessing, and Sharing Data Could Strengthen DHS's Efforts but Would Have Costs," states that "DHS takes actions to address a small portion of the estimated overstay population due to, among other things, competing priorities; however, these efforts could be enhanced by improved planning and performance management." The term "...takes actions to address a small portion of the estimated overstay population..." is a diplomatic way of saying the administration generally is ignoring the problem of illegal immigration resulting from foreigners who enter the country legally and then take a U.S. job and stay illegally.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

How well have previous administrations done and how well could you reasonably expect future administrations to do? If you truly think that replacing Obama will result in the next administration to do more in terms of enforcement on the immigration front, I've got a few bridges to sell to you.

Well...if politicians are to be judged on their record?

In the here and now what "other" administrations did is irrelevant. Kind of ironic from someone whose campaign bullshit harped on "change", but you now want to compare him to what his predecessors did in the past? What ever happened to "the buck stops here"? Man up or move over.

How do you know who else will do what in the future? However, it is apparent what Obama is (or in this case isn't) doing now. That speaks volumes.

One thing I've noticed is that ICE appears to be targeting employers more now, which is a better use of resources. The Denver chain Chipotle is currently under investigation.

The key word here is "appears".

When judging the here and now, what's the measure stick if you're going to ignore entirely where we came from? That just makes no sense. You know as well as I do that the profiteers of illegal immigration - businesses big and small - will do all they can to ensure that their supply of slave labor continues to pour in. ** overstay enforcement - it's a waste of time. Enforce that businesses only hire and employ those eligible to work here. Put those that don't comply out of business and soon there will be no illegal aliens left in this country and no incompetent businesses that depend on slave labor to compete with real, viable businesses.
