1) Yes, your step-daughter will derive US Citizenship due to the naturalization of her mother. You'll have to file a N-600 to get a Certificate of Citizenship for her or apply for a US Passport as evidence of her citizenship. I recommend that you do both. (but apply for the passport first)

2) No, as she is not naturalized, but derived her citizenship from her mother, she cannot also change her name as one who was naturalized. You will have to apply for a court order for a name change just like any other person...

Thanks so much,

Then do I file the N-600 at the same time that I file the N-400 or do I have to wait till my wife gets her citizenship.

Thanks,

Tine

After the you have your naturalization certificate, since a copy of it needs to be submitted with the N-600. Our daughter received her certificate last week. Going Tuesday to update her SSN record.

That was fairly quick. Sent the N-600 in around the middle of May

After that they both need passports, but still not to happy with putting those certificates in the mail.

Simple solution.

Book a vacation outside the US. When you are within two weeks of travel, book an appointment at your nearest Passport Agency office (must have proof of travel w/in 2 weeks & you WILL have to show it). Take the day off and drag everyone to the PP office. Beg plead and grovel your case and explain that you were an idiot (***see note) who didn't plan ahead and can your girls please get their pps now because you have this fabulous trip planned already.

Pay up the azz (expedite fee etc), get the pps that day. Only leave the certificates out of your possession for a few hours (but in the presence of armed guards).

See? Simple.

:)

*** You don't really have to BE an idiot to say you are one. This can be a real advantage when you are trying to get someone to help you. This is intended as general advice and not a direct comment on your idiocy or not. YMMV. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Hello mdyoung! I would like to know How long did it take you to get your daughter's certificate of citizenship? We sent my son's application not that long ago and since then we've been wondering how long it takes. I'm glad I found you because no one seems to be working going through this. Thanks

Is there a legal reason the child isn't given the opportunity to change their name with the N-600 as the parent can on the N-400.

Actually in this case yes... A name change is a state judicial function.

When you request a name change by naturalization, what that does is the USCIS works with the state to make the name change happen. Because of this, when you request a name change, your oath must be given by a state judge who also approves the name change at the same time. Since the minor does not receive the oath by the judge and does not go through the name chage process by the N-400, there would be no paper record of the name change...

However, a name change for a minor is relatively easy to do... just a few forms and a extremely brief hearing in front of a judge.
