Do people search for fellow immigrants in their new city via VJ? I'm new-ish to this site, so maybe people do it all the time. I imagine they'd ask around in the forums, but is there an easier way?

I know you can write your location in your profile, so once you've moved to the US you'd probably put in your new city, but is there a way to search VJ for locations? I think it would be cool if you could just type in a city and it would show you all the users who'd identified themselves as living there. You could add them as friends and then go from there. I'm sure some people would meet up and not really have a connection, but there's always a chance you'd click and become friends with a fellow expat. If anything, you'd have your visa journey to talk about :P

I like that idea. I know I try to find people from Cambodia so maybe when Theary arrives here it would be easier to make friends besides mine. I know she will probably get home sick and want to be around people she can relate to.

I don't look for Americanos when I am in the Philippines, and she does not look for Filipinas here. Neither of us accepts the idea that having the same nationality means you will have much in common.

Neither do I.. However, seeking out people who have had the same experiences would help them integrate easier in America for some people. And also little things like knowing where to find groceries from their native country helps ease homesickness of a new immigrant.

oh, that's a cool search tool! but what i meant was, can you search for people who are in your newfound US city? if i'm moving from montreal to portland, is there a way i could search for other VJ-ers who had immigrated there?

don't get me wrong, i didn't mean the same nationality necessarily! it would be boring for me as a canadian if the only people i wanted to be friends with were other canadians :P i just meant it would be nice to have a way to find ANYONE from VJ who's also a newbie in the US city you settle down in. when i finally move in with my fiance, i will be in a city without friends, and it would be nice to find people who are in the same situation as me.
