TN from within US?

Is it possible to apply for a TN from within the US?

I currently don't have a job offer, but my field is on the list of professions eligible for TN status. I know as a Canadian I have 6 months allowance in the country, so I am planning on going to the states in the near future to live and look for work.

I am also wondering - will the border patrols give me a hard time for this? Is there anything wrong with going to there for job interviews, looking for work, etc.?

Thanks!

No.

Probably not. You can not live in the US, you can visit.

You can apply for a Tn while in the US, but it can take several months to process before you have your Tn in hand, so it's unusual to find an employer who will wait that long for an initial Tn. Most people get their first one at the border. If I was already in the USA, I would go back to get the Tn at the border. If you are close to the border it is just a matter of driving back to Canada and turning around.

The bigger problem is you are not allowed to use the visitors visa to look for work (or reside) in the USA. It's not a big deal if you were to incidently find a job prospect while on a visitors visa, but to go for the specific purpose of job hunting is not allowed.

When I used to go from Canada to the USA for job interviews, I told them the purpose and itinerary at the border and they just let me in normally. No hassles, and they never gave me a specific visa for it.

I will not have my own place, and will be "visiting" my boyfriend and other friends from college, so I will not technically be residing in the US. I am trying to make the permanent move, but of course, it requires a job offer and the visa. I have had little luck even getting interviews while I am still in Canada.

If he is a USC all you need is a wedding ring.

Technically you cannot look for the job when you enter the US on the pretext of being a visitor.

Also as everyone mentioned TN would take few months to be processed and your potential employeer has to be willing to wait for that many months.

Better option is you do interviews from CA (telephonic) and when something sounds more promising where they want you to do Face to Face, then you can travel.

Just being here is not going to make any difference. Same employer is first going to ask you to do a telephonic.

The other posters are correct kanukgirl. If you wish to look for US jobs, use sites such as monster, computerjobs, dice, washingtonpost.com, ...;

You can visit for interview (the prospective employer should send the letter if the company wants to do F2F) or if hired by phone, the employer can send a TN-1 format offer letter--which you can show to the Inspectors at either PFI (where you board flight to US) or POE (if entering by land).

If you wish to marry your boyfriend, you would be much better-off having him petition you for a K-1.

SO, I will be going to visit the US for the next two months. I have a return ticket back to Canada, as well as a bank statement proving I have enough funds to return (if they would like extra proof). Other than that, however, being a recent college grad, I lack any other "strong ties" to Canada.

Now, I've been applying for jobs online since February, and in my experiences I haven't heard back from some of them for weeks, even a few months. For example, I recently heard back from a job I applied for at the beginning of May and had a phone interview. Now, ideally, I would like to get a job offer before I enter the states so I wouldn't have to worry about all of this stuff, but of course, the potential employer would like to wait until I am in the states, meet in person, let me tour the facility, see if I am really interested in the job, etc. I understand I will have to make the trip back up to the border to get my TN if I do get this position.

Since I will not be actively looking for work when I enter (as it was a job I applied for a while back), is it possible that the CBP may find issues with this?? Ie. Will they give me a hard time if/when I go up to the border to get my TN? If I don't get the job, of course I would like to remain in the country for the next two months strictly as a visitor.

Thanks.
