We were not asked for any evidence of any kind. The only thing we showed them at the interview was our driver's licenses and her passport. We were there for a total of MAYBE 20 minutes - and got a compliment for having the paperwork we sent them in such good order (which also didn't include anything in the way of "evidence" - just what was asked for on the forms).

On the other hand - I can't imagine why you would not have acquired an ID card or driver's license and SSN. Why delay? You'll need them if you expect to be any kind of 'real person' in the U.S. My fianceé got her state ID card the day after she arrived and applied for the SSN a week later (got the card maybe 2 weeks after she arrived). By the time we actually got married about 6 weeks after she arrived, she already had a driver's license too. There is no advantage to delaying these things. Pick up the pace.

Cheers!

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

I guess a lot will depend on who you're dealing with. In my case we had to show all the evidence we had, and even then the IO asked us if we had more!

If the interview is in 6 weeks, then you should get a joint bank account at the very least.

Try to get some bills, like utilities, on both your name.

And yes, how come you don't have a SSN?

Good luck!

Well some K3 visa holders who applied for AOS alone (no EAD concurrently filed) may not be eligible to apply for SSN because they need to see the EAD or the Green card before they could issue a social security number... That's my current situation now. So with no SSN, you can't apply for a driver's license. Some banks but not all (like Bank of America) even require SSN for one to be able to open a bank account.

So basically if you don't have SSN, you are disabled.

Is getting a SSN dependent on K1 or K3 visa? I'm K1, and went to the SS office the day after my arrival in the states. First they told me I couldn't get one, but I got assertive and told the guy that as a K1 visa holder I could have one, and that he should check with his supervisor.

Weird weird that it would be different for K3 visas!

6 weeks is plenty of time to get a joint account

Most utilities will add your name to the bills without asking for a SSN - try calling the gas company, the water company, the phone company and take whatever evidence you have. Explain why its hard to get more evidence - most interviewers should understand.

On another note the EAD and Driver's License and State ID are quite worthless in my opinion as they are limited to what they can do - they expire too soon and are just a rip off in my opinion. After you get you Green card then at least you can get a 2 year license - not just a 90 day if you apply as soon as you arrive (For us K1s.) Good Luck

Yeah K1 visa holders should be allowed to apply for SSN... Those with K3's can apply too with EAD ofcourse otherwise they just can't. :hehe:

Just asking...why do you need your EAD to be added to any bills or bank accounts? The only thing my husband needed was a social security number, which he got 4 weeks after arriving. He doesn't have his EAD yet.

K1 visa holders CAN apply for a SSN. As I stated above, my husband got his 4 weeks after his arrival and he came on a K1.

Hi, if the bank doesnt let you with just your passport, which should be enough for a checking account, they had no problem with me if I gave them my ITIN number. Its a number from IRS that you will need to file the tax returns if you dont have the SSN yet. I had to get that since my SSN took forever to get here.

Hope this info helps.

I tried to get my wife on my bank account but they could not get her on since she did not have her SS#. Part of the new rules of the "Patriot Act" they told us. You see, we kindoff screwed up. I wanted to wait until we got married so she did not have to change her name on her SS card when she got it. The jerk at SS admin said she cannot get her card since her name did not match that of her I-94 even though we brought a certified marriage certificate showing her name change. I called the 1800 number and they could not understand why they would not accept our marriage certs but they also said the local SS office has the last say in this. I did get her on my Life and medical insurance though and I hpe this helps. Good luck on your AOS.

10Yr GC arrived 07/02/09 - Naturalization is next

The drama begins - again!

And now the drama ends - they took the Green card . . .

i'm trying the best i can to show residence prove by copying phone bills, cable, joint bank accounts. but one thing i'm concerned about is that we got married at the JP and didn't have anyone there to take photos for us. but we got someone to take a photo of us in front of our apartment before heading to the court to get marry. do you all think that's sufficient?
