Getting Fingerprints in Ontario

I posted a little while ago that the RCMP in Ontario will no longer be doing criminal record checks (aka "police certificates").

Turns out we are also not doing fingerprints, however, the choice is left to the detachment itself. Most of you won't need fingerprints as it's only required if you do have a criminal record, but just be aware that you might not be able to get them at your nearby RCMP detachment.

Your best bet is to see if any police stations or if your local Commissionaires office has LiveScan, the electronic fingerprinting machine. The turnaround time for receiving your criminal record in that case is about 2-3 weeks (so I hear), instead of approximately 6 months with paper fingerprints.

Just an FYI for my fellow Ontarians.

Please note that in the province of Ontario, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police no longer issues police certificates or provides fingerprinting or criminal record check services to the public and private sector.

These services are still offered for a fee by the Ontario Provincial Police, your local police service and some private companies. These firms can be located in local yellow pages and internet searches using the term "fingerprinting services Canada".
