I was just made aware of this fee at travisa.com website where it asks that you need to surrender your indian passport in order to obtain (or renew) indian visa.

I will eventually need to renew my indian visa however I have no clue where my indian passport is. If i remember correctly, they (because I had one which expired and a current one) were shredded, I will make sure but I think that is what happened.

How can i furnish my indian passport when I don't have it. And what the heck is this thing about having to pay a fee of $250 for renounce your indian citizenship. I already paid a fee to become a citizen of the united states, now I have to pay a fee to renounce a citizenship which I am no longer holding on to? can someone please explain this to me?

more importantly what do I do now that I dont even have the indian passports?

thanks

Maybe this page from the Indian consulate will partly explain: http://www.indiancon...nunciation.html

Also read the final two paragraphs. I'm assuming you acquired US citizenship before May 2010, so it seems like all you may have to do is pay $20 for a Surrender Certificate. Although that may require you to actually have your passport.

Are you just renoucing, or are you aiming for O.C.I.?

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Interesting enough, I am in NY and I have been advised to look at travisa.com which handles visa information for the Indian consulate in NY.

https://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com/renunciation/display-requirements

The above website (select, United States and New York and Naturalized before Jun 1 2005). says somethign else.

about having to pay $250, but my question is still not answered cuz I don't have my passport anymore.

Sorry I replied without seeing this thread.

O.C.I. will most likely be done also the same time.

But that hasn't been decided yet. Most likely what will happen is that when my current VISA for India expires (in a year), I will apply for OCI.

However I do not want to wait onto the renunciation because it seems the fees have increased and there is a chance they will increase again.

Any advice?

Ok, so the $250 is the penalty for not surrendering it.

I would either try to phone the Indian consulate, or post in a forum which is specifically Indian expat related, to ask what happens if you cannot surrender the passport due to having destroyed it. Someone on VisaJourney may know the answer, but without firsthand experience it is unlikely.

The Chicago Indian consulate says this:

4. I have lost/misplaced/submitted (to US authorities) my Indian passport. How may I obtain a Surrender Certificate?

If you do not have your Indian passport, you need to submit a sworn affidavit (notarized) explaining loss of your passport. You may attach a copy of your lost passport with your application. If your passport has been retained by the US authorities, you may submit some documentary proof to that effect. If you have lost an Indian passport, you need to submit a police report (mentioning loss of Indian Passport) along with your application. Once your application is accepted as complete, we will attest the "Renunciation form" (submitted by you) and return the same to you. In this case no surrender certificate will be issued.

Also read http://www.***removed***....er-certificate/ It says there is no penalty if you lost your passport. You need to prove your Indian origin, your US naturalisation, and complete the Affidavit of Loss: http://www.***removed***....of-passport.pdf I guess mentioning you probably destroyed it may not actually be the best thing.

Yes $250 was old number and then after pply got mad at the Indian consulate they reduced the fees.

Well you shredded the passport, which is not your property …… unfortunately.

So when you give up the citizenship its your responsibility to return it to the country who issued you otherwise you were asked to do something different.

When country has their representative who would collect the old passport at oath ceremony, unfortunately I don’t think India has anyone.

So in last couple years Indian consulate figured out hey… here is the loophole in the system and we can charge Indians for not returning the passport( for which they never cared earlier) they started this fee business.

Sorry i dont know how to post my comment n where? Pls if some one can assist on the below very urgently as currently i am in U.S

Please advice on the following points urgently:-

01. My minor girls aged 10 and 13 travelled from India to USA on 15th May 2014 along with their

Parents on Green Card.

02. We have a returned ticket to India for travel on 12th June 2014 so that both of them can

go to school in India on 16th June 2014.

03. Based on their Fathers Naturalized Certificate (USA Citizen) both the Girls have got their

USA Passport issued to them on 10th May 2014. They are still holding Green card and

valid Indian Passport.

04. Both the girls didn't apply for Certificate of Naturalization as yet, but will do so before

they turn 14 years old.

05. Since we don't have enough time to surrender Indian Passport and get multiple entry visa to

travel to India on USA Passport since this process takes about 3 to 4 weeks as we will miss

our travel dates to India.

06. Can we travel back to India with Indian Passport and Green Card and once in India complete

formalities to surrender Indian Passport and get multiple entry visa for 2 years on USA Passport

with Foreigners Registration office in India and at the same time apply for OCI while staying in

India.

07. To get renunciation certificate after surrendering Indian Passport and get multiple entry visa

on USA passport in USA takes about 3 to 4 weeks and we cannot take a chance to loose

our return paid ticket to India to wait here to complete the paper work and be late to school.

08. Hence decided to travel back to India on Indian Passport. Will this create problems for us in

India. I believe 3 months grace period is given to surrender Indian Passport once a Foreign

Citienship holding USA Passport without any penalty fees or fines.

Please advise me in details with all the points and with clear picture what can be done in this case.

Thanking the team in Advance, i had much help earlier from this team to help me with my interview process.ad
