Pakistan should reunite with India - becoming part of India. Then let the government of India deal with the homegrown extremists.
Totally unworkable
  1. the nation was founded on a false idea (seeded by a hard-drinking crooked lawyer) that Muslims would suffer retribution (from Hindus) for their six centuries of misrule and plunder
  2. the government by 1969 (despite of warnings by prominent then-Pakistanis such as Mujib and Maulana Bhashani) had morphed to where its raison-d'etre was hate of India
  3. India's Indira Gandhi in 1971 ruled out any such, even with the less-nasty eastern wing (which Pakistan's own stupidity split-off as Bangladesh)

Reunite India and Pakistan? Steven has lost his mind. Whatever cultural similarities existed between India and Pakistan in 1947 have diminished every day since as Pakistan becomes more and more "middle eastern" and India's cultural center of gravity shifts south.

If India's cultural center shifts any farther south, they will be chumming the Indian Ocean.

ISLAMABAD (AP) - The [Pakistani] army and the government have come under criticism domestically for allowing the country's sovereignty to be violated.

...

"The Pakistan security forces are neither incompetent nor negligent about their sacred duty to protect Pakistan," he [Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir] told reporters. "There shall not be any doubt that any repetition of such an act will have disastrous consequences," he said.

Bashir repeated Pakistani claims that it did not know anything about the raid until it was too late to stop it. He said the army scrambled two F-16 fighter jets when it was aware that foreign helicopters were hovering over the city of Abbottabad, but they apparently did not get to the choppers on time.

Didn't the same hold true for East and West Germany?

Reunification is out of the question. An overwhelmingly majority-Hindu nation is a nice thing to have. No one wants those jihadi types to have seats in Parliament in New Delhi. No one.

It just seems like a more pragmatic and long term solution to the ongoing tension between the two countries. Pakistan seems far off from accepting a more western democratic government.

Dude, these two places have not much in common anymore. The people truly hate each other. I remember that Indian chick I was dating years ago - the sweetest girl you could imagine but she'd hate on Pakistanis for the best of them. Ridiculous.

That's all the more reason to find commonality rather than continuously push further away from each other. Look how that has panned out in other parts of the world. North and South Korea, Bosnia and Serbia, Rwanda...the list goes on.

You can't re-unite people that do not care to be re-united. Just as you can't eternally separate those that would rather be one nation - as was the case for the artificially separated Germans. Let the people decide. If they want to go it together, so be it. If they don't, then let them go their separate ways. Why is that so hard to grasp?
