California’s economy is slowly improving and the technology-centric region of Silicon Valley and San Jose is experiencing robust growth, according to a report from the University of the Pacific's Business Forecasting Center.

The housing and government-centric Sacramento economy remains the only northern California region still stuck in the recession.

The San Joaquin Valley also lags in recovery in the state, but has seen some growth in agriculture, transportation and trade and manufacturing, as well as the end of a decline in housing-related industries, according to the report.

You wouldn't have known it by driving through the area like I did last week.

What is booming is the the areas around Gilroy, Santa Maria, and Camarillo. Or, at least somebody thinks they will. They are building these huge outlet centers in those towns. I think cheap real estate in what was farmland less than a decade ago might have something to do with it.
