I am not sure if many of you have seen the lastest travel warning issued by the U.S. government on traveling but feel free to see if for yourself. www.travel.state.gov it is pretty scary and I am set do leave on March 26th. Is anyone else traveling despite the warning? And does anyone have any suggestions? I must admit that I am a little nervous, but this has been a long planned trip in the making. I'd love to hear from all of you!

There has been a warning about traveling to the island of Mindanao in the Philippines for years. I found everyone there to be very kind and friendly but it is always recommended to watch what you are doing and where you are going, foreigners stand out like a sore thumb so opportunists could take advantage of the situation.

You have to decide what to do for yourself. Talk to your loved one and see what they suggest. When I went, I avoided some things by going to Abjua instead of Lagos. My husband (not at the time) felt it was safe for me to go. Even though I had never met him in person, I trusted him. He says that if I were going to meet him now, he would tell me not to come. He says that in the last 6 months or so, things have gotten to the point where he would not feel it is safe for me to be there. So, basically, do a lot of talking. Discuss with each other your fears and what things are like there. Discuss if it is worth it/nessicary to travel now, or if a different time or place (different country) would be better/safer. You have to do what it right for you as a cople and only the 2 of you can decide what that is. Good luck!

I know that at least for the past four years it hasn't been considered safe to travel to Nigeria, but people still go. There was a volunteer in my country who wanted to travel there, but the Peace Corps wouldn't allow her to go, so she snuck in and came back just fine. You just have to trust that your SO will keep you safe and out of harm's way.

Also use your own common sense. Don't carry so much stuff so that you look like you have money and are an easy target. If you don't feel safe someowhere, follow your gut and leave.

I just went to that link and it does sound pretty scarry. Before I went everyone kept scarring me with stories about Nigeria. I felt pretty protected when I got there though. If you decide to go, just be cautious and try not to look too foreign along with the usual precautions.
