Hello everyone!

We just got married. And I want to be on my husband last name. I do not know when should I change it and where... Do I need to do that before sending documents for AOS or after? I even doubt what last name put in all documents for AOS.

I will appreciate all responses. Thanks.

Put your new last name on your documets, your name is changes when you marry if you want it to be.

Your proof is your marriage certificate.

Fill out AOS with your married name and your green card will have your married name.

Hi. Just got married too! When I filed my AOS, I used my husband's last name. Even if I don't have an identification card with my new last name, I still used it from now on after we got married. Like applying a CSV card, etc. Anyway you have proof that your now married like the marriage contract.

Congratulations!!:D

Hi Luliia+Nick,

I don't know what the rules/laws in your state are but this was my experience when I got married in California.

We had to apply for marriage certificate at our county office. When we filled out the form, both the husband and wife have to state what their new name would be after marriage if they want to change their last based on marriage.

In my marriage certificate it has nothing showing my name changed, it has only my previous name. I have used it for AOS and have my green card in my married name. I have also used it to change all my other documents and they had no problems with it.

We live in Nevada. We applied for marriage license first and that got married. No one ask us for name change...If I want or not. They do not do that in marriage certificate, I suppose.. I do not know for sure.

fill all the forms with your married name. otherwise, you are going to have a headache and paying a fee for changing name in the green card.

I got married in Massachusetts and there is a part in the marriage certificate that says : name after marriage, so I put my husband's last name.

good luck!!!

It VERY much depends on your state laws. People cannot say that you DEFINITELY can change your name because it is state dependant. In California for instance unless you nominated to have your name changed you will need a court order. For myself in Iowa my marriage certificate has name BEFORE and name AFTER marriage. If I didn't change my name "after" to my married name then I would need a court order.

You said you are from Nevada. I looked up Nevada laws. You don't need to nominate your married name on your licence or certificate so you can choose to keep your name or you can choose to change it without a problem.

If you want to change to your married name then write your married name on your AOS forms. You can also take your marriage certificate to the SSA and change your name (some SSA offices won't let you do this till you have your EAD).

I renewed my passport and used my husband's family name. I used his family name too in all my documents after we married.

Yup!

Fill out all AOS documents with Married name. but also fill out a new G-325A (Biographical information) and there list your married name as your name and under 'All other names used' you write your maiden name. this ties it together.

In Vermont your married name is nowhere on your Marriage certificate either and I have had no problems with changing my name on ID once I had my greencard in married name.

Good luck!
