He showed us his long form birth certificate, which was frankly none of our business (the short term adequately established his eligibility).

But he won't show us this, which is our business.

The "60 Minutes Bomb" will be ticking on this for a long time to come;

I'm sure they will spare no expense to dig up something.

Years ago, Life & Look magazine used to routinely publish pics of war & natural disasters

which today would be considered "bad taste."

We were rightly outraged when the Americans who were decapitated by extremists had their suffering

posted all over the internet, so there will likely be a similar outrage by not only extremists but ordinary

Muslims who never approved of or supported Bin Laden.

This is a very touchy subject indeed as the families of the 9/11 victims would in many cases

(but not all) hope to see such photos for their own personal reasons.

The administration, once again is erring (or doing the right thing) on the side of caution.

Maybe they are looking at poll results or bowing to confidential requests by moderate Muslim leaders.

In any case, I'm pretty sure they won't say the real reason WHY they are not being released.

We are awaiting a news conference by the press secretary shortly to explain the decision.

BTW, they are now saying that no women were killed in the raid, just 5 men, including bin Laden and one of his sons.

No reason to release the photo IMO. Releasing it would serve only to satisfy the curiosities of some at an unknown risk to many. Anyone who doesn't want to believe he is dead will not be swayed anyway. Conspiracy theories will abound regardless.

Has there been any mention of the US questioning these woman before releasing them to pakistani authority? Although not that it matters, they probably don't have any helpful info considering the "I man, you woman" sort of philosophy these woman were subjected to.

I understand that all the survivors were questioned, but no notable info from their statements have been released.

Releasing photos is not a satisfaction for the American People, but a confirmation the White House is not hiding answers [truth] from us.

This is a democratic strategy.. People, elections are approaching.. is a tactic to wait longer in order to keep expectancy..

The White House says that because they are absolutely sure that the deceased is bin Laden, because the doubters are unlikely to be convinced by photos, and because "that's not who we are", the photos will not be released.

That's what's been said, so far, and seems to sum up the thinking behind it, as far as they are willing to say, at least.

The decision to release or not release has nothing to do with the US public's curiosities or internal politics and everything to do with the ramifications of doing versus not doing for US citizens who are not currently within the US and effects on foreign policy strategy. I doubt there are more than a handful of US citizens who are genuinely skeptical of his having been executed.

The appetite of US citizens to see the pictures as some kind of curiosity reminds me of the days of the freak show. I guess that appetite is not that deeply buried.
