You two and whomever else can run a thought experiment with alternate realities. Back in reality though, if Bush had ordered a just killing of the mass murderer OBL, almost all Americans of all political persuasions would not have any problems with the action.

You underestimate the political nature of the American left when it comes to military action ordered by a Republican.

The stories would be all over the place on people crying out than an unarmed man was shot in cold blood at the hands of our miliary. The "I, I, I, I, I, I" Speech that Obama gave would be incriminating evidence against Bush.

The left wants the military to always fail and do horrible things, except for when they are in power. Then the message is quiet.

The point is, an unarmed man was shot in the HEAD. Not in the body to wound, not to 'imobolize' him. He was shot in the HEAD. No arrest, no trial, shot in the head on sovereign soil for a crime that he allegedly had a hand in.

Why do you think the initial reports were that he was armed? Because they knew how bad it would be. But they couldn't hide it for long without someone running their mouth off, so they had to tell the truth.

The next time someone is shot in cold blood who is unarmed, who everyone is 'sure' committed a certain crime, there better be no backlash at the cops. otherwise the hypocrisy will continue.

I would suggest you read archived news data from media and LWN sites from 03-08, and then look how silent they've been for the past year or two since Obama took office on these matters.

If Bush would've ordered a "hit" on Osama in a sovereign, foreign country that we're not at war with, he would've been impeached. Obama is hailed as a hero.

If Bush would have ordered and presided over this successful operation, he would have been celebrated all the same. And if that happened closer to 9/11, perhaps we wouldn't be looking at over 6,000 dead US military personnel, a 100% increased defense budget, dozens of new government agencies with thousands of new government workers and, consequently, we probably wouldn't be looking at a 14 trillion dollar pile of debt. But then ole' W really wans't spending much time thinking about OBL and wasn't all that concerned about him as early as spring of 2002.Which might just be one of the reasons it took so freaking long to turn OBLs lights out.

For US military personnel, those would be war crimes that are regularly adjudicated under the UCMJ.

Paul, the point is you can't easily speculate on the circumstances that led to Bin Laden being shot in the HEAD. Quite a different situations from what happened to the Brazilian electrician on the London Underground.

He came out immediately after saying he didn't do it. People like that do not say they didn't do it. Not who's considered a leader of that group.

OBL was a perfect target for the US. Hell the media was blaming him within hours before any credit was taken by anyone.

I see your point, however, Olbermann and Seymor Hersh aren't the official mouthpieces of the Left anymore than Pat Buchanan and Ann Coulter are the official mouthpieces of the Right. Now the question is, does Olbermann have a point? I think in the context of what he was saying, he did. However, it is a bit of an oversimplification of how our national security operates. The CIA conducts all kinds of covert operations in foreign countries without their permission or Congress (although, I believe the Intelligence Committee oversees their operations). I think we should have pause about CIA conducted assassinations, but in this case, it was with the world's most notorious terrorist and bad guy who has eluded capture for too long. It appears that Pakistan was essentially providing him a safe haven and IMO, Obama's intelligence advisers must have laid it out for him as to what is probably going on and what are the options for bringing OBL to justice. It wasn't pretty, but the decision to go into Pakistan without that country's permission or even knowledge was the only way they could nab him. This wasn't indiscriminate in any way. If future operations go like this, assassinating others, then I think we should all take pause.
