WASHINGTON – Preliminary government estimates say there were more tornadoes in a single day last week than any other day in U.S. history.

Government analysts said Monday there were 362 tornadoes during last week's outbreak, including a record-setting 312 in one 24-hour period.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the largest previous number on record in one event occurred from April 3-4, 1974, with 148 tornadoes.

NOAA says 340 people were killed during the 24-hour-period from 8:00 a.m. Wednesday to Thursday.

It was the deadliest single day for tornadoes since the March 18, 1925, tornado outbreak that had 747 fatalities across 7 states.

Paul said they are wrong.

I wonder if there has ever been a US History that hasn't been recorded.

you do realize that weather instances have only been recorded somewhat accurately for a little over a century, right?

We're too deep to discuss weather here. :bonk: This is officially an OT thread.

Freaks will be freaks and the weather/climate will be/change due to nature/other factors.

So here is a little history for you. In 1874 an international commission designed standard forms for the recording of meteorological data. These were soon in use worldwide. A similar form, Form 1009, was used in the United States with few changes from 1891, when the Weather Bureau was established as a civilian agency, through 1948. In 1849 Joseph Henry, Secretary of the Smithsonian , persuaded the telegraph companies to transmit weather reports free of charge and began building a network of weather stations. Within 10 years 500 stations were reporting.

Game-Set-Match goes to Paul. :star:

I'm thinking that if they were only as prepared for Tornadoes last week as they were in 1925, and only had the warning systems they had back then, this would have been the single deadliest day- period.
