Quitting your job. Tips?

I know it's typical to give two weeks notice, but is it better to give them more time?

You should check to see what the law is regarding quitting in your state. Some states legally require notice, others you can basically walk out whenever.

either way, its not a good idea to just "walk out". you need to leave on good terms and not burn any bridges. in some companies, the only way you can get a raise is to quit, go work somewhere else for awhile, and come back! that's just the way it goes these days. there is no loyalty to the employee from the company, so its hard to expect an employee to be completely loyal either.

I walked out of my last job with ATA airlines. told them kiss my .... azz.

I had already secured another job. I did not feel like working 2 weeks more.

at the time - I was with ATA 2.5 years.

I'm about to give my notice too. I wanted to give them enough time to find someone else, but not too much time that they will try to talk me out of it or make me feel guilty or embarrassed for too long!

At the end of the day you need to do what is best for you. You can't live your life worrying about what other people may think. And if your boss is really nice, they will be happy for you.

My $0.02.

It's business. If they had to fire you because the company needed to cut back on employees, trust me, it wouldn't matter how much they liked you personally, they wouldn't keep you on the payroll.

Same thing applies to you. You want to move on, and you don't owe them anything just because they're nice.

You should, however, give at least two weeks' notice, but not because it's nice, but because it's good business etiquette. I don't know your type of job, but sometimes longer may be appropriate -- if, say, your business is the type that assigns you to development projects, you wouldn't want to take on a three-week project and walk out one week before the end, even with two weeks.

When you leave, be polite in your exit interview. You may never work for that company again, but you may run into some to the same people in that industry again (like five years down the road at another company), and it doesn't pay to be known as the one that threw the fit and left.

go out with class!

I had a relatively messy separation from my last employer after being employed for 8 years. Had I stooped down, it could have escalated. I was a professional and went out with class, and because of that they now call me for consulting and I get to charge them lotsa dollas!

This process is not slimey. Slimey is sitting around in an office playing how can I get rid of ha;f the staff so I can get a bigger bonus check and boost the stock price short term even if it means the company wont be worth a ###### in five years because I have no idea what Im doing.

Anyhow, dont give too much notice if you think they might tell you to leave immediately.

And write up a nice resignation letter.

Be nice in your exit interview.

Thats all I have to say :-)

excellent post and points..total agreement

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Oh definitely, that's what's so difficult, I wont' be giving them notice until I've been hired at the other place, but with that, it means I'm completely blindsiding my current employer.

It's a very slimy process. You have to sneak around and go to interviews and not allow your current employer to know for fear of being fired. The business world is such a dirty little place.

Almost everyone is looking out for better opportunities either within the company or elsewhere almost all the time. There's absolutely nothing slimy about it. It's what I call "bafu" - business as fcuking usual. ;)
