Quitting your job. Tips?

So, I'm working at my first job out of college, I've been here for almost a year, and it looks as if in the next month or so I might be offered a position at another company that is exactly what I want. Better pay, better opportunities, better vacation time (important for when your fiance lives in another country), and in a better city.

I've never had to resign from a job before. Sure, I've quit jobs and left internships all through college, but those were always really definite reasons: I was graduating, I didn't have enough time with school, etc. I'm nervous about it! Well, actually terrified. I'm going to be completely blindsiding them when I come to them with my notice.

My immediate supervisor has been very nice to me, but there has been some major personality clashes between myself and two higher ups in the company. So, on one hand, I feel excited to move on, but on the other, I really am having a hard time erasing the guilt for leaving the people that have been nice to me hanging.

Is this something that is just part of the job world and you have to learn to get over it?

I know it's typical to give two weeks notice, but is it better to give them more time? Or will that just cause more problems? Any tips for how to go about this? We are a VERY small company (11), and fortunately, they are very used to personnell changes. Due to the above mentioned personality clashes, we've had 3 people leave in the past 6 months.

Guh, this is more nerve-wracking than any interview I've been to!

the two weeks time is standard. it's nice to give more time as you'll want to build job references in your life. the question remains as to what work climate you'd be subjected to if you gave them more time. and only give notice when sure you have a job lined up with the other company.

Oh definitely, that's what's so difficult, I wont' be giving them notice until I've been hired at the other place, but with that, it means I'm completely blindsiding my current employer.

It's a very slimy process. You have to sneak around and go to interviews and not allow your current employer to know for fear of being fired. The business world is such a dirty little place.

People quit and move on all the time and I'm sure they expect it since your just recently out of college. More notice the better, But look out for yourself!! Only give noticce when ur 100% sure of the other job. Once certain, I would ask to speak to the higher authority alone and nicely explain the situation. Never burn bridges. if your polite they wil understand.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

This process is not slimey. Slimey is sitting around in an office playing how can I get rid of ha;f the staff so I can get a bigger bonus check and boost the stock price short term even if it means the company wont be worth a ###### in five years because I have no idea what Im doing.

Anyhow, dont give too much notice if you think they might tell you to leave immediately.

And write up a nice resignation letter.

Be nice in your exit interview.

I left a job 6 months ago................I didn't give them 2 weeks notice because my new employer offered me an additional 2 weeks vacation If I started immediately. I felt bad but I knew when I was enjoying those vac days I wouldn't care.

Having said that-I would NEVER be able to go back to my old company because of my actions. Definetly burned that bridge. You don't have to give any notice(in Pennsylvania it is a "free will state") you can be let go at any time & you can quit at any time.

just do what feels right.

I don't understand why this is nerve wracking. This is business, don't make it personal. Give them 2 weeks notice if you can afford to. Otherwise, just leave.

Cass,

Giving 2 weeks notice is not 'blindsiding'. It is standard, and it's more than many companies give their employees when the situation is reversed. And as cmartyn mentions they might in turn escort you out immediately (depending on circumstances).

It is part of the business world, so don't feel bad about it. And also as cmartyn wrote, leave nicely (my words would be 'with brown lips') no matter how you really feel about the company and your co-workers and no matter how they react to the news.

Totally agree with Yodrak. In order to make advances in salary and positions these days, changing companies is about all you can do. Just don't make a habit out of it, or do it every year. Make sure you get some time under your belt in each or your positions.

Dear Boss,

I am writing to inform you that I am resigning with effect 1st Never, 2006 to pursue a new position.

I have very much enjoyed my time with ABC Company, and am grateful for the opportunities that have been afforded me during my term.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if if you have any questions.

Kind regards,

Bebop the Great

Or something along those lines would be my suggestion. The important thing to remember is that you may want a reference from these people one day!

Good luck....

You should check to see what the law is regarding quitting in your state. Some states legally require notice, others you can basically walk out whenever.

either way, its not a good idea to just "walk out". you need to leave on good terms and not burn any bridges. in some companies, the only way you can get a raise is to quit, go work somewhere else for awhile, and come back! that's just the way it goes these days. there is no loyalty to the employee from the company, so its hard to expect an employee to be completely loyal either.

I left my last job last Friday after giving two weeks notice. Just write a polite resignation letter and dont be too honest. Its very tempting to mention everything you didnt like about a company or the people when you have given in your notice. Best to leave on a good note, be professional, dont give too much away and try be positive.

Cass,

I agree with Yodrak to a point (uh oh, death wish).. However, being that this is your first job, you need assurance that a "reasonable reference" will be left in the wake.

Play this out reasonably, to the level that gives you a good reference. This is essential, at this stage of your career. What will that cost you? a few more weeks? Ensure that you will get a good reference.

So, I'm working at my first job out of college, I've been here for almost a year, and it looks as if in the next month or so I might be offered a position at another company that is exactly what I want. Better pay, better opportunities, better vacation time (important for when your fiance lives in another country), and in a better city.
