Alright:

He(the USC) and I (Canadian) were married December 30, 2010. I've already notified CRA of my marriage and name change, so that's out of the way. However, I'm lost on how to file my taxes with him. I was planning on calling CRA in the morning (good luck) but if anyone could fill me in on their successful experiences, I could stop pulling my hair out :blush:

Arrgghh, I know this thread got made a zillion times, but this is my first time looking into it :bonk:

USCIS

Jul 15/11 - Sent I-130 Package from Honolulu

Jul 18/11 - I-130 package received & signed for in Chicago
Jul 19/11 - Priority Date
Jul 21/11 - NOA1/USCIS Acceptance Confirmation received
Jul 29/11 - Received I-797C hard copy
Aug 4/11 - Touched
Feb 16/12 - NOA2 Approval (212 days since Priority Date)


NVC

Feb 28/12 - NVC Case Number, BIN & IIN Assigned, Optin E-mail for EP Sent

Mar 2/12 - DS-261 Submitted
Mar 5/12 - Electronic Processing Opt-in Accepted, AOS Invoiced & Paid
Mar 7/12 - NVC receive IV electronic package, AOS shows "Paid", AOS Package Sent
Mar 9/12 - IV Bill Invoiced & Paid
Mar 12/12 - AOS fee shows as "Not Paid - Rejected": Human error. AOS re-paid.
Mar 13/12 - IV is "Paid." Will have to be re-paid post imminent "Rejected" status. NVC e-mail "Checklist Cover Letter" asking for my $$$

For Canada, it's pretty easy to file taxes when married. You just have to tick off you're married on the form and put some information about your spouse. That's it. It's not like the USA where you have a few choices on how to file (married filing separately, married filing jointly) and then have to file for an ITIN and get proof of identity. Nothing like that needs to be done when filing in Canada. You will probably have to include a copy of his W2s, but that's it. I found it very easy to file taxes as married. A bit harder than when I was single since I had to mail my provincial tax form and include his W2s, but it was still a simple process compared to what my husband, the USC, had to do.

I called CRA later on and yeah, since they knew I had married and he was a U.S. citizen (from when I mailed in change of marital status) they just told me to do his basic info, and make sure it was checked off that he wasn't a resident of Canada in 2010. None of his documents or anything else needed. Super easy lol
