Whilie I can definitely see why there was no option but to kill the guy after he was portrayed as number 1 terrorist in the world, the whole notion of making terror suspects this notorious seems to create more problems than it solves. I am not glad that he is dead, I would rather he had been put on trial for his actions even while I know that was never going to happen. I don't think this 'solves' any problems and nor do I see any instant troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in the wake of this; it's not as if the terrorists are going to suddenly decide that as a result of this death their cause was lame and they'll all shuffle off home and be 'good' people now. Indeed, the opposite is probably true, it will fuel the extremists who use the US as an excuse for their home grown problems and poverty. So, no, I am not rejoicing that he is dead.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

He deserved to be caught, and he couldn't be caught alive, and I am sure if I was a relative of a victim I would be relieved that the person responsible has been found and dealt with. None the less, if it had of been possible to have him judged by trial, in a similar way to the Nuremberg trials that would have been my preference.

Check out the FBI's most wanted list - they're looking for Usama bin Laden. Well, not anymore.

Interesting, though, that you can clearly identify Fox consumers by how they spell the name. There's no news network that spells his name this way.

Maybe you can join the pity parties over at Hamas or the Taliban quarters?

Yes, that's exactly where my sympathies lie. I don't rejoice at death, I'm not a knitter at the guillotine, it gives me no pleasure at all. Sorry, I don't buy into mass hysteria of any sort.

Did Trump take credit for bin Laden's death yet?

No, he's first working up his demand to see the death certificate. The long form, of course. Once that is made public, The Donald will take credit for having accomplished what nobody else could accomplish. Meanwhile, Sarah Palin reiterated that we need to capture or kill Usama bin Laden.

that would have been too dignified, the same thing that happened to saddam would have happened to him

You think Saddam came over well at his trial? He seemed rather a pathetic figure to me. However I do know what you are saying, there is no absolutely fool proof way to dispose of notorious people. It might be better not to invest them with so much symbolic power in the first place?

If bin Laden would have preferred a trial, he could have had one. He had about a decade to produce himself - I'm sure he got the news that he was wanted for directing the slaughter of thousands of innocent people all across the globe. He could have ensured that he would be taken into custody rather than eliminated. He chose not to and hence is now a dead man. The only regret I have here is that they had to pollute the sea with this garbage. There's a ####### floating somewhere in the ocean now. Gross.

It's not about what he would prefer or not prefer, it is how best to deal with a difficult situation in order to prevent his death from becoming symbolic and disproportionate and out of touch with reality of what he really was. His symbolic value is huge, dead or alive - and part of that is because the West invested so much store in him as responsible for 9/11. While he might have been the architect of that act of terrorism, and a horrible, disgusting action it was he didn't create the situation that led to 9/11 and that situation still exists. Believing that the death of this notorious personality will bring about any sort of resolution or closure is pretty odd to me, something I simply can't wrap my head around. As I said, he death was inevitable but I don't rejoice over it because I don't endow it with any symbolic meaning.
