Just because some have trouble finding those voices...

For Muslims, a reason to rejoice

By Arsalan Iftikhar, Special to CNN

(CNN) -- Although there has not been much cause for celebration for our global village over the past decade, the world was able to breathe a sigh of relief at the announcement by President Barack Obama of the killing of Osama bin Laden by U.S. special operations forces at a mansion on the outskirts of Abbottabad, Pakistan.

In addition to the vast majority of Americans who are relieved by his death, there are more than 1 billion Muslims around the world who salute the fact that bin Laden's ungodly terrorist mischief has finally come to an end. Simply put, there has been no single person in nearly a millennium and a half of Muslim history who has ever hijacked our beloved religion of Islam more than bin Laden.

"We must also reaffirm that the United States is not and never will be at war with Islam," Obama said during his historic address Sunday. "I have made clear, just as President Bush did shortly after 9/11, that our war is not against Islam. Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader. He was a mass murderer of Muslims. Indeed, al Qaeda slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries including our own. So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity."

Muslims have been the greatest numerical casualties of al Qaeda and bin Laden. The Combating Terrorism Center at West Point released a stunning report that said Muslims have accounted for the vast majority of the total number of casualties from al Qaeda attacks between 2004 and 2008 throughout the world.

From 2006 to 2008, 98 percent of al Qaeda's victims were from Muslim-majority countries.

During his famous June 2009 speech at Cairo University, Obama highlighted the common themes of humanity found within the three major Abrahamic religions. He said that "The holy Quran tells us, 'O mankind! We have made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another.' ...The Talmud tells us: 'The whole of the Torah is for the purpose of promoting peace.' " Finally, he said, "The holy Bible tells us, 'Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.' ... The people of the world can live together in peace. We know that is God's vision. Now, that must be our work here on Earth."

The death of bin Laden will not be the end of extremism around the world, but no reasonable observer could deny the fact that this mission represented the cutting off of the al Qaeda snake's head.

Although there are certainly low-level franchisees who will try to continue to create havoc throughout the world, the importance of the killing of al Qaeda's godfather on Obama's watch cannot be emphasized enough.

The president was right: Bin Laden was not a leader of Muslims. Myself included, there were many among the 1 billion Muslims worldwide who uttered three simple words when we heard about the official confirmation of bin Laden's death.

Those three words were: "God is great."

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Arsalan Iftikhar.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Islamic Society of North America Welcomes Justice For 9/11 Victims

Source: ISNA

(Plainfield, IN: May 2, 2011) The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) joins all Americans in thanking President Obama for fulfilling his promise to bring Osama Bin Laden, leader of al-Qaeda, and perpetrator of the 9/11 attacks, to justice.

We hope his death will bring some relief to all the families, of every faith and walk of life, who lost loved ones on 9/11 and in every other terrorist attack orchestrated at the hands of Osama Bin Laden.

Over the past decade, ISNA has stood firm on our stance that ISNA and Muslims in America condemn the actions of Bin Laden on 9/11 and all acts of terror at the hands of Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and all others who spread fear and hate through violence. We have repeatedly condemned the calls of Bin Laden and others like him for mass bloodshed and the attacking of innocent lives across the world.

As the President pointed out in his address to the nation, the ideology of Bin Laden is incompatible with Islam: "Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader; he was a mass murderer of Muslims. Indeed, al Qaeda has slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries, including our own. So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity."

President Obama marked his hope that today, Americans will "think back to the sense of unity that prevailed on 9/11" and remember that "on that day, no matter what God we prayed to, we were united as one American family."

"ISNA joins President Obama and prays that as the nation continues to heal from the devastation inflicted upon them at the hands of Bin Laden, we will turn to each other today, united, and emerge tomorrow with an even stronger resolve to take every action necessary to protect the precious ideals of our nation that Bin Laden attempted to destroy on 9/11: peace, tolerance, respect, and freedom for all," said ISNA President Imam Magid.

From 2003:

Memo to Osama bin Laden: Go to hell

Islam was sent as a mercy to humanity, yet Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda has made it the currency of hate and violence.

BY MUQTEDAR KHAN, FEBRUARY 26, 2003

Mr bin Laden,

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Benevolent, I begin by reciting some important principles of Islam to remind you there is more to Islam than just a call to arms:

1. Islam was sent as mercy to humanity (Koran 4:79).

2. Do not make mischief on the earth (29:36).

3. People, we have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes that you might know one another. The noblest of you before God is the most righteous of you (49:13).

4. There are among the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) upstanding nations that recite the message of God and worship throughout the night, who believe in God, who order honour and forbid dishonour and hasten to do good works. These are the righteous (3:113-114).

I am writing this to make clear there are Muslims in America and in the world who despise and condemn extremists and have nothing to do with you, and those like you, for whom killing constitutes worship.

Islam was sent as mercy to humanity and not as an ideology of terror or hatred. It advocates plurality and moral equality of all faiths (Koran 2:62, 5:69). To use Islam to justify declaring Armageddon against all non-Muslims is inherently un-Islamic - it is a despicable distortion of a faith of peace.

One of Allah's 99 names in the Koran is "Al Salam" which means "peace". Thus, in a way, Muslims are the only people who actually worship peace. Today this claim sounds so empty, thanks to people like you, Mr bin Laden.

You and those like you are dedicated to killing and bringing misery to people wherever they are. God blessed you with the capacity to lead and also endowed you with enormous resources. You could have used your influence in Afghanistan to develop it, to bring it out of poverty and show the world what Islam can do for those who believe in it. You chose to provoke and bring war to a people who had already been devastated by wars.

Yes, many innocent people lost their lives in America's war on Afghanistan and many more might lose their lives in Iraq. This is indeed regrettable. But we must never forget that the West is divided and agonising over this decision to go to war in Iraq. While many Americans and Europeans oppose the war, Muslim nations have already agreed to co-operate in this war.

No Muslim leader has tried to play the role of a statesman on this issue. It is a tragedy that there is not a single Jimmy Carter or Nelson Mandela in the entire Muslim world who would stand up and speak for justice.

Before we rush to condemn America we must remember that even today, millions of poor and miserable people all across the world are lining up outside US embassies eager to go to America, not just to live there, but to become Americans. No Muslim country today can claim that people of other nations and faiths see in it the promise of hope, equality, dignity and prosperity.

Yes, we American Muslims will continue to challenge the Bush Administration's proposal to wage war against Iraq. Many of us think a regime change in Washington is as necessary as a regime change in Baghdad, but that is an intramural affair.

Once the war is declared, however, make no mistake, Mr bin Laden (you too, Mr Saddam Hussein), we are with America. We will fight with America and we will fight for America. We have a covenant with this nation, which we see as a divine commitment, and we will not disobey the Koran (9:4) - we will fulfil our obligations as citizens to the land that opened its doors to us and promised us equality and dignity even though we are of a different faith. I am sure, Mr bin Laden, you can neither understand nor appreciate this willingness to accept and welcome the other.

Sure, at this moment, out of anger, frustration and fear, some in America have momentarily forgotten their own values. I am confident that, God willing, this moment of shock and insecurity will pass and America will once again become the beacon of freedom, tolerance and acceptance that it was before September 11.

On that day, Mr bin Laden, you not only killed nearly 3000 innocent Americans, many of whom were Muslims, but you signed the death warrants of many other innocent people who will die in this war on terror and many more who will suffer the pain and the misery of war.

Before September 11, the United States was giving tens of millions of dollars in aid to Afghanistan and was content to wait for the Iraqi people to free themselves and the rest of the world from their dictator. On that day, you changed the rules of the game, and Muslims in many places are suffering as a result.

When the Prophet Muhammad (saw) and his companions fought in the name of Islam, Allah made them victorious and glorified them in this world. They made Islam the currency of human civilisation for more than a millennium. You and your men, on the other hand, face nothing but defeat, global ridicule and contempt. You run and hide like rats in caves and dungeons. You live in the dark. Your faith neither enlightens you nor enables you to live in the light, and you have made Islam the currency of hate and violence.

Let me tell you that I would rather live in America under Ashcroft and Bush at their worst, than in any "Islamic state" established by ignorant, intolerant and murderous punks like you and Mullah Omar at their best. The US, Patriot Act notwithstanding, is still a more Islamic (just and tolerant) state than Afghanistan ever was under the Taliban.

Remember this: Muslims from all over the world who wished to live better lives migrated to America, and Muslims who only wished to take lives migrated to Afghanistan to join you.

We will not follow the desires of people (like you) who went astray and led many astray from the Straight Path (Koran 5:77).

I conclude by calling upon you Mr. Bin Laden and your Al Qaeda colleagues and Mr. Saddam Hussain to surrender to International Courts and take responsibility for your actions and protect thousands of other innocent Muslims from becoming the victims of the wars you bring upon them.

Dr. Muqtedar Khan is currently a Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Saban Center for Middle East Policy and author of American Muslims: Bridging Faith and Freedom. This article and more of Khan’s writings can be seen on his website, glocaleye.org.

Ahhhh they retracted the photo! I missed it.

UPDATED 12:33 a.m.: AP retracts photo purporting to show Osama bin Laden's dead body

Posted: 05/01/2011 11:14:26 PM PDT

The Associated Press has retracted a photograph released late Sunday night purporting to show the dead body of terror mastermind Osama bin Laden.

AP announced that it cannot independently verify that the person in the photo is Osama bin Laden nor can it confirm the source.

The photo in question was published earlier on this news site. Bin Laden, the elusive mastermind behind the deadly Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks that led the United States into wars in Afghanistan and later Iraq, was killed in a firefight, President Barack Obama said in Washington on Sunday.

DETROIT — Muslims and Arab-Americans across this area — one of the largest and oldest Arab-American communities in the USA — rejoiced at the news that Osama bin Laden was killed.

By Carlos Osorio, AP

"The world is definitely a better place without the patron of all terrorists," said Imam Hassan Al-Qazwini, head of the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Mich., the largest mosque in a city with the highest concentration of Arab-Americans in the country. Qazwini called bin Laden "the world's most infamous thug."

"It is so comforting to see justice being served while the families of the thousands of his victims rejoice," he said.

Ibrahim Aljahim, 29, of Detroit, said of bin Laden: "He never represented Muslims or anyone else."

"It's a great thing," said Aljahim, head of Arab American Outreach. "We're very happy. He hurt Muslims more than any other religious groups."

In his address late Sunday, President Barack Obama echoed similar thoughts, saying: "Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader. He was a mass murderer of Muslims."

Osama bin Laden killed

At the same time, some Arab-American leaders cautioned that the battle against extremism is not yet over.

"As gratifying as it is to see this, we should continue to be on alert," said Imad Hamad, regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. "Executing the symbol of bin Laden does not execute the ideology (of extremism). It's a vital mistake to focus on the person and ignore the ideology."

Arab-Americans and Muslims felt the effect after bin Laden's Sept. 11 attacks as federal law enforcement shifted its focus toward counter-terrorism, leading in some cases to extra scrutiny here because of its Muslim community. But bin Laden was generally reviled in that same community.

"We welcome the elimination of Osama bin Laden and the threat that his terrorist leadership posed to the people of the world," said Dawud Walid, head of the Michigan branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Amanda Andreski, 19, of Royal Oak, Mich., faces final exams at George Washington University, where she is a student.

But after hearing the news that Osama bin Laden was killed, she and many others poured into the streets in Washington, around the White House in celebration.

"U-S-A! U-S-A!" people chanted, she said by phone from the streets in the nation's capital. "This is amazing. People are coming here from every direction. It's insane!"

Some even climbed trees and lamp posts in excitement. Others chanted "Obama got Osama" and broke out in patriotic songs, Andreski said.

"Every song that has 'America' in it was sung," she said. "Pennsylvania Avenue is packed with people and even more are coming."

Drivers are "honking and blaring their horns," she said. "People are so patriotic."

Fixed that for ya.
