Hey everyone. I was reading through some past descriptions of the process at the Bogota embassy. There was one US citizen who reported that the visa was temporarily not issued pending him (the US citizen) getting a police certificate from DAS. Obviously the benificiant of the visa needs that, but nowhere on the forms does it ask for that from the US sponsor. Does anyone know any more about that?

My situation is that I am applying for a CR1 visa for my wife through DCF (direct consular filing). I have been been living in Colombia for the past three years, though I am now on a tourist visa since re-entering the country in March.

thanks in advance,

Dave

Do you have Colombian ID? ( Cedula ) I remember in on of my trips that i want it to get a Bank Account and they dennie me and explain that After certine time we US citizens can apply for the cedula .

If you have that Document and a Colombian Number ( Cedula #).Then you are in their Judicial system .I dont rember the Time table for a USC to be consider Resident However it was less than 1 year. I never did because i only been in Colombia a Max of 22 days at a time .

If you need the website let me know .

I the US they dont have Certificate of Good Conduct as you know already .

I have an expired colombian cedula de extranjeria (basically an id card for foreigners). I've had two of them, one for each year that I had a work visa here. However, my work visa and cedula expired in March, and I am currently in the country as a tourist.

I would most likely be in their stystem. However, why i would need to do this for the US government is what puzzles me. Anyone doing DCF like I am has obviously been in Colombia for over 6 months, and basically has to have a cedula and be in the system. I have never heard of anyone else being asked for this, other than one poster here.

The problem is that you need an appointment to get the certificate (at least colombians do), and it's an all day process, but our visa interview is on this friday.

I'm trying not to freak out, but don't want to show up unprepared or have them tell us that I need to get another document because that would entail another trip to Bogota for the two of us, my wife missing more work, and at least 500 mil pesos in flight costs.

I have no direct experience with this but I remember seeing it also. I seem to recall that in those rare cases who were asked to provide that info, the petitioner was a dual US/Colombian citizen.

The only time I've read about the US Embassy requesting the police certificate of the US citizen from the DAS is when their background looked suspicious or they had a few red flags they wanted cleared before issuing the visa. They've also asked for the migratory movement letter but only if they don't believe the information on the application form is accurate in regards to the trips the US citizen has made to Colombia.

In any case, just wait until you go to your interview to see what the CO says. If for some odd reason they request any additional documents, all you need to do is get them and make another appointment to hand them over. After this is done, you will get your visa.

There are 2 type of certificates and i belive you need Both The First ONe is the comon Good Conduct Certificate that is easy to get .The Colombian Goverment has a website were you can get this free of charge and they will accept that .

The Second one may or may not have a Inpact on you is the one that records all exist and entry to Colombian Persons In and Out of the country .

That I know for a fact that your wife if colombian will need for her interview I just ask my wife to get hers .

You can also search for Certificado Judicial en Linea CO.

Thanks Diane!

None of that should apply to me, as I was here legally on work visas, and shouldn't have anything that raises red flags. The only issue is getting the time off and getting over to Bogotá. It's not cheap.

feo - We already have both certificates (police and migration) from DAS for my wife. My inquiries were regarding me, the sponsor of the visa, as in a few cases they have asked for certificates for this person as well.

best,

Dave

Dave, The US embassy is concerned with paperwork on your wife not you, as you're a US citizen already. Your information will only be scrutinized when you apply to adjust her status in the states, i.e. criminal history. At this point...it's all about your wife...in regards to DAS records.

felo,

It was my understanding that with a CR1 visa there is no AOS in the US, since this is a direct immigration visa as opposed to a K1. Am I confused on that?

No, you're right. Your wife will get a CR1 visa, if you have been married less than two years, or an IR1 visa, if you've been married for more than two years. Your wife will get her green card and Welcome to America letter in the mail about 2-8 weeks after she enters the US. If you check the Social Security box in her DS-230, she should also get her SS card in the mail.
