For a country where the majority of people live below poverty, it is sure expensive to call there! No matter what phone card site I'm on, the Philippines has one of the highest rates!

Has anyone found any good quality service, reasonably priced options that they use?

Unfortunately we can only talk online when she goes to the city. But that is a few hours by bus from where she lives - so very inconvenient to both of us due to the time difference and me still working.

Have you ever tried Rebtel? The price is pretty reasonable plus the connection is clear. It's 15.9cents/minute to any mobile phones in the Philippines and 10.9cents/minute to any landline in and outside manila.

i understand your predicament.....

we were in similar situation before.......

i am not sure if your fiance's place is being serviced by PLDT (a telephone company)...

i find it a lot cheaper for my loved ones (philippines) calling me (by phone) rather than me (US) calling them...

if there is a pldt landline where your fiance lives, then, she can just buy a "budget card".....

P100 card can be used for more than an hour !!!!!!

and can be used repeatedly as long as you dont use it up the first time.......

but, she has to call you from philippines..... and use a pldt landline......

maybe, if convenient for both of you, set a time when she can call......

hope this helps........

if you have to use a phone, then I second Rebtel...they are probably the best best and you get detailed calling records of it every month too. Other than that, skype or the internet providers that are similar to them (yahoo, gmail, etc..) are good. If you will be calling from your phone and your girl has a good internet connection, buy a magicjack and send to her. That by far is the cheapest option....but sometimes call quality isnt the best.

It seems some missed the part where she has to "travel for hours to reach the city..." where she then has internet access. So Skype, Gmail, MagicJack, Vonage (VOIP period) is not an option. It sounds like phone is her only means of communication.

For calling from the US to PI, Skype, Magic Jack, and a VOIP service are probably the cheapest. Skype has a plan for $70 a month to the PI (400 mins, or 15.7¢ per minute), Magic Jack is $40 for the first year, then $20 each year after. Probably the cheapest one you will find, but if you are calling USA to PI mobile, and your fiancee does not have one on her end due to lack of internet, then it is 22¢ per minute, and there are cheaper cards/plans out there such as Rebtel.

Overall, I think Rebtel will be your cheapest "phone plan" route to go, since she does not have internet.

Good luck!

Magic Jack is offering a FREE TRIAL today, 1 May 2011. This waives the $40 normal purchase fee!! (edit - Disregard, it's a gimmick to get you to order... you get it free today, then have to pay $40 + $7 for shipping 30 days later.)

Yeah she does not have convenient access to the Internet, so unfortunately the VOIP options are non-options right now. I think I will look into Rebtel, because I call her cell phone. Thanks all, for your help.
