Driver's License

I have a problem, hopefully you guys can help me with it.

Some info : I'm 24, I'm from Alberta (I've heard Alberta is the most strict province for licenses ), and I'm going to California.

I don't have my driver's license yet. I have a learner's, and have had it for years, so getting the driver's license isn't a problem. But I'll first only receive a probationary license. My fiance and I are hoping to be in the States by the end of this year or early next year, and it'll be two years before I qualify to take an advanced road test to get my full license. Will that be a problem in the States? I know I'll be required to do it all over again when I can get a California driver's license, but until then I want to be able to drive.

Can anyone help me with this? Thanks!

Are you talking about a " G2 " license, like you can drive alone but your not fully licensed for some things?

If so, you can use that to drive in the states yes. I always did with no issues, then again I was not speeding around like a jackass either lol.

I also changed my " G2 " to a full license in Nebraska. Our state only required the written/computer question part. They gave me a full US license from a partial G2 Canadian ( Ontario ).

My experience was the same in Colorado. I moved down with a G2, drove on it for a few months, and eventually traded it in for a full state license. The difference is that in Colorado, it transfers over without a written or road test.

My test was a joke.. it was a touch screen computer thing. Each question has a picture and the answers were multi choice and it was made SO obvious what was the correct one. Eg: a picture of a stop sign without the stop word on it. A picture of a yield sign asking what it was. Picture of a double yellow line asking if you can change lanes on it.

I will say... i have learned more by driving in the USA in Nebraska, than driving in Montreal Quebec and Ottawa Ontario. lol..

Out of curiosity, how does it work to apply for a licence in the US if you never had a Canadian one? Just the general state by state testing/procedure? or is it different due to immigrating?

Its the general whatever the state requires from you to do. The same wait period as others to take the test etc.

The only 1 difference is you may need the GC, they may not accept the visa for the testing portions. You would have to ask the state DMV on that tho.

Usually pretty much the same as Canada tho, you get a Lerner permit first, then you take a road test after some time and get a full license ( no gradual steps like Canada has. aka G1 G2 G3 )
