Hi,

I couldn't seem to find it online anywhere, but I was wondering about the DV lottery and it's requirement of proof that you won't become a financial burden to the government. How much would be required of me (myself only, just a single applicant) to have in my bank account if I cannot find a suitable/willing sponsor?

Also, what if I had some of the amount required but, also had the remaining amount through my sponsor/affidavit of support?

How should I go about this?

Sorry for the questions, I just couldn't find the answers anywhere online.

My lawyer told me yesterday that I do NOT need an affidavit of support since it is NOT listed in the required documentations that have to be submitted along the I-485! I told him that some websites say you need it, etc...and he said he's never asked his clients to submit them and they've never been rejected. You should mostly trust what lawyers tell you, especially when it comes to serious stuff like that :)

While it is correct that no I-134 is strictly needed, you do need to prove you can support yourself upon arival, and the I-134 is the easiest way to do this. From travel.state.gov/pdf/T1026V-DV-2010bulletin(3).pdf:

"If you are selected to apply for a DV visa, you will be required, before you are issued a visa, to provide evidence that you will not become a public charge in the United States. This evidence may be in the form of a combination of your personal assets, an Affidavit of Support (Form I-134) from a relative or friend residing in the United States, and/or an offer of employment from an employer in the United States."
