I haven't logged on to Visa Journey in a while. Hope everyone is doing well.

I live in the United States (Alabama) and am engaged to a man in Morocco. I've been there 5 times. It's a beautiful country and I love the people there. As a lot of you know, people in the United States can be very prejudiced. I am white as well as my family. Some members of my family are prejudiced again black people. One of my sisters has recently said some things that leads me to believe that my family thinks that all people in Morocco are black because Morocco is in Africa. During all my visits to Morocco, I have seen people that are very white, a few that are very black and a lot that have an olive completion. Sounds very much like the people in the United States to me; however, when filling out forms that ask for race, most just have "black", "white". My fiancee has an olive completion, brown eyes, dark brown hair that has soft curls on top. I'm the type person that doesn't really see colors.....I'm not like some of my family members, but I don't think my sister is going to leave this alone. I was wondering if some of you have come across this with family and/or friends and if so how did you handle it?

I'd also appreciate it if someone could tell me if the people in Morocco are considered either black or white? Is there some background that makes them neither one? I've looked at some things on the internet, but it all just confuses me. Could someone please give me a simple answer as to the ethnics of the people in Morocco?

Thank you.

I am also engaged to a Moroccan, by the way. I read somewhere in the last few months that Moroccan's are considered "caucasian" on forms - our government sees them that way or categorizes them that way. I don't know the thought-process behind this .... all I know is my fiance is a gorgeous guy, whatever his color. Good for us for not being prejudiced, and the people who we know who are - it's their loss to go through life being prejudiced, right?!

Morrocans and all north african are considered White Caucasian , not black. simply because theyr are not black enough and their race is mixed(Berber, Tuareg...)that`s why if you are from North africa you can not claim URM.

In time, maybe they will get over it. My family is from Alabama too. But it wasn't the black/white issue. It was that he's Muslim. I had to tell them to keep their opinions to themselves or they just wouldn't see me anymore. They eventually came around. Now both of my parents like him.

Have you introduced your sister to him on Skype? That might help.

Thank you.

My daughter is half Moroccan and her dad is quite dark with straight hair and kind of oriental looking eyes as some berbers have. His older brother is very dark and has an AFRO and his nieces have very course hair so in one family you can have all different colors. I dont understand this whole obsession with race as far as Moroccans because frankly there are black Moroccans as well in the sahara and they certainly are not caucasian. Thats like thinking oh they are American so they must be white. You have entire subsets of races all over Morocco and some berbers even look almost oriental but they are not. I think you just fill out whatever color you are as far as whatever country your family comes from. My daughter does not look completely caucasian. She looks mixed and from the looks of the rest of her family in pictures, some of them are definitely black

So tell the people in Alabama, it depends. Just like it depends in the US

You have to say many or most because there are alot of black moroccans and they are not caucasian. There are definitely black Algerians and they are all over the south.Tuauregs are not white and there are many saharaouis that are very black.. It depends. They are no less Moroccan...oh I take that back..The sahraouis dont want to be part of Morocco but they have to be but thats a completely different story

Would it be a relief to learn that they are often considered caucasian? It kinda sounds that way, sadly.

It sure does considering there are many black Moroccans. I think it is a case by case basis. Not all Moroccans are by any means all caucasian. I think that relative needs to get a grip and quickly

Are you saying there are not black Moroccans and Algerians? When I was in Oran I met very very very black Algerians and Moroccans because its so close to the border. I mean very very black. Are you saying they are not North African? Why does this really even matter? Who cares? My daughter is half Moroccan and she looks very mixed and her uncle is very dark with an afro. Couldnt you say that it depends on each person and just like in the US you check on a case by case basis? I will say that in my opinion, I thought there was alot less predjudice about color in Oran than alot of other places I have been.. Just saying.. Why does it even really matter?

The race of a nationality is determined by international agreements. Many who are in no way White are classified as White by the U.S. government because that's what their government has requested. I've started learning to teach immigration and citizenship courses and it's ridiculous how often an applicant who is obviously not White is told that's what they should check :( That's says more about the racism of world governments than it does about reality.

My husband is white like I am but he wants to hurt someone when they call him hispanic or latino. He's very offended by that as his family comes from Italy, Spain, Norway and Syria. He says that anywhere else he'd be considered European, but in the US, he's classified as latino because he was born in Argentina. As he put it one time, "all these people are so different that to try and classify them its ridiculous."

Whats wrong with being part black? I would rather be marked as black and with an IQ than be identified with trailer trash and the Jerry Springer show.

I think that if you have to jump up and down to identify yourself as not being part of a particular race, than racism is coursing through your veins at a pace stronger than you would admit

As a side note, I always tell people my daughter is African. Its what makes Moroccans particularly beautiful, that mix of arab, jewish, berber and black that many are. There is no pure Moroccan race.. thats a bunch of bunk. They are a mix of everything...and to say that there are not black moroccans is a total joke.
