Shipping my stuff to the USA

I have my own house here in London, which I'm going to rent out when I finally move over to the States. However I would really like to ship some furniture over if it's not too expensive, as the thought of leaving my lovely house and all my possesions (Including about 150 pairs of shoes!!!) To then arrive in the States clutching only 2 suitcases fills me with dread.

Therefore my question is, does anyone know roughly how much it would cost to ship a container approx 12 ft by about 5 ft?

Also if that is too expensive what about a container roughly 3 ft by 4 ft that you could use for books. CDs, shoes etc?

Do they go by size or weight or both?

I don't mind if it takes 3 months to arrive, but it would be really nice to have a few of my own possesions with me eventually.

Any rough estimates would be really appreciated I just want to see if it's affordable or too expensive to justify doing.

A 150 pairs of shoes?? Does your hubby-to-be knows about this?

I keep them in 2 wardrobes winter and summer and I don't think he has worked out that the 70+ shoes in 1 wardrobe then changed half way through the year.

He thinks that lot are excessive so haven't had the heart to show him the full amount.

Must say I love those walk in closets which you seem to find in America
