As already stated, if you're case stays at NVC for more than about ten days, then it's undergoing additional processing for some reason. There's no way to know or find out the reason unless NVC sends the case back to USCIS. Nobody can or will tell you whether your case was selected randomly or for some case related reason and nobody can or will tell you how much extra time it will take. Welcome to bureaucracy.

Thanks...it's been at the NVC for only a couple of days. The reason I know it's in additional processing is beacuse I got a reply e-mail from NVC.

It's a catch-all term. If it's only been there a couple days, it could just mean they aren't ready to forward it to the Consulate yet.

Just out of curiosity; you say that you got a reply email, was your original email to them just a general status inquiry?

Then why did they tell me it's standard? I don't mean administrative processing.

Do you have any idea why we are going through additional processing? I see no reason at all, just wondering what would be the basis for being selected for this?

Get used to it when dealing with the NVC. The worker drones who answer the phone are prone to giving out mis-information.

Yes, it was a general status inquiry: we received our NOA2 on April 21st so I wanted to see if it was received by the NVC and get a case number. They responded that it was received by the NVC and is currently undergoing additional processing. Then I called and they confirmed that and also gave me the case number. When I asked if this is standard, she said yes, this is normal, nothing to worry about. I guess I'll wait a week or so and ask again: as was said before, if it stays there for over 10 days, then it could really mean it's in AP for whatever reason. In the meantime, I'll stay hopeful that it just means they received it yesterday and haven't yet sent it to the consulate.

I ask because I sent an email today for the same reason. We got our NOA 2 on the 22nd. I'll let you know what my response says (if and when I get one). Good luck!

Thanks

Amazingly I got a response in about 3 hours. Here is what mine says.

Dear Sir/Madam:

Your inquiry has been received at the National Visa Center (NVC).

The NVC recently received this petition. The appropriate agent

(applicant, petitioner, or attorney) will receive instructions for the

further processing of this petition within 6 to 8 weeks.

Sounds like a canned response to me. I'm guessing that yours said something different? Did they give you an NVC case number?

Additional and administrative are not the same thing. I am under additional and others who have been under additional stay 15 days to 30 hopefully we are both out of nvc quickly. Administrative can take 60 days plus. On the search bar look up stuck @ nvc

I so hope you are right. Someone said earlier that additional processing is the same as administrative. Good luck to you and please keep me posted on your progress, as I promise too.

I just received an e-mail from the NVC that the petition has been forwarded to the consulate: so additional processing may in fact mean the time between receiving the petition from USCIS until it's sent to the consulate. Thanks everyone for your replies

The 2 terms are absolutely used interchangeably by the NVC. Sometimes I was told additional processing and sometimes administrative processing. There is no precise definition of either - they both mean your case is undergoing further review for an indefinite period of time.

All you can do is keep calling to determine when your case has actually been sent on.
