 Fish is a positive for Vika, not me.

What took you so long to answer???????????? OMG, now I can go to sleep. Thank you Brad.

I was out yesterday and came home before dinner. Alla was cooking all afternoon. I opened the refrigerator and OMG!! #######!!!!!!!!!!! I get thrown to the ground and pummeled by the smell of fish and onions!!!!!! There was a huge bowl of onions all cut up and a big plate of theat smelly fish uncovered in there. I called the hazardous waste crews and came with thos suits and gas masks and covered everything.

Good news...she put the food in the refrigerator

More good news...the onions were accompanied by her hand diced cabbage and cut up beets which means another big pot of borscht in on the way!

Bad news...she didn't cover the stinky stuff

(PS a 2 quart jar of milk, unpastuerized, fresh from the cow, was left on the kitchen counter. YES, I am SURE my wife is from the FSU!)

Just the membership dues Gary. All of us are periodically driven to our knees by the deadly aroma of, fishy, garlicky, onion funk wafting silently through the house. It is good when the concoction o'the day is confined to the relative cool, airtight fridge - but that just doubles your fun when you wonder next week why that bologna sandwich tastes like fish.

I feel so sorry for you guys that married those normal village girls; my wife being from the big city can't stand that stinky commoner food and only likes fish that doesnt stink up the place.

And she's always concocting something ; last week we enjoyed sone homemade Russian/Chinese potstickers.

Mission accomplished!

Made the trip to Sacramento and spent the day shopping for teas, varenki, permini, soap, various medicinal items, bread, sausage and of course finally my vodka. They did not have the large bottle so I bought 5 of the small ones. The wife opened it last night with the toast, drink and sniff of bread.

Unfortunately the restaurant we wanted to visit is out of business. We traveled around after looking through the Russian yellow pages we picked up at one of the stores and finally found a Ukrainian restaurant. It was a long day, but well worth it. I expect my stepson to show up at the house soon to enjoy some of the treats we obtained. It was a long day of listening to three women speak Russian, so I was pretty much alone in my drive.

Oh well, I got what I wanted.

We have only one real Russian market here. It is a sub-section of a convenience store and the prices made it too expensive for us and not there wasn't much of a selection either. My step-daughter is working at the store and the person who was running that section got let go for having sticky fingers with the stinky fish, so she got the job dropped on her. She told us the person who was running it before was marking up items at 200 to 300 percent and only ordering things they liked.

Now with my daughter in charge, the prices are coming down to a normal markup and there is a lot more variety available. Also the clientele is starting to pick up. I would not be surprised to see it become a separate store in the future.

Sounds like your step-daughter has found herself in a very lucrative position if she plays her cards right. Good for her! :)

For most people I would agree, but it's not her plan for the future. She is working towards a medical degree and starting to find it difficult to balance between school and work. To be honest the owner of the company is expanding his stores so fast he doesn't have the people to man them. I am seeing that this company will not be around for too much longer. If it fails, I might just step in and purchase the Russian store from him and open shop.

Dave,

If you think that is possible, then start now learning about the suppliers and look into setting up a store yourself. This can take some time and working out details before starting it is much better. You might want to check the demographics to see if there are enough eastern Europeans in the area to sustain a business.

Taking into consideration the level of urbanisation in Russia, 'village girls' can be considered an 'endangered species'.
