Russian stores in America

We are going to the Russian stores in Sacramento on Saturday and I was curious about what those stores are like in your individual areas. The different stores generally carry the same types of merchandise but we have found that you have to be very careful to look for expiration dates. Sometimes the dates are removed or covered over which is generally not a good sign. I love the deli departments with all the various types of sausages. :)

My wife tends to spend a lot of money at the book stores buying teas, soap and various types of medicinal concoctions. I just know that she is always happy after we go. I just have to remember to pack the ice chest. :bonk:

As for me, I hope the liquor store will have my favorite Ukrainian vodka.  You can see it in my new avatar. Nothing quite like a good Honey Pepper Vodka.

Since we have to drive 1 1/2 hours there will be lots of Russian and Ukrainian music being played and with three women, lots of Russian speaking. Too bad I won't understand much. At least I have the music.

We will also plan a lunch at a Russian cafe.

We have a large Russian community in Detroit. Two well-stocked markets and a couple of great Russian restaurants. I know Lena will enjoy them every couple of weeks. Found a nice Russian Orthodox church within 30 minutes from home. I attend regularly. Made friends. The paster is from Eastern Ukraine. He will marry us when she arrives. We'll have a small family/close friends dinner reception at the Fiddler Restaurant afterwards.

Good points include fish eggs, fish with head and tail attached, river fish (carp), salty fish, and preserved salty fish.

Bad points include lots of exposure to the Russian community and loads of drama.

Vika tends to ignore the drama, but the fish....

Oh, the salty fish and other fish. Not one of my favorites.

We don't hear about any of the drama since we aren't locals. :)

I'm actually surprised at the prices at our local Russian market, they're quite reasonable. And the lady who owns it is really pleasant. The Russian book store in our area, on the other hand, is not only insanely priced, but the couple who owns it are just nasty. When Russian new year was coming up, I wanted to get a "С Новым годом" banner to surprise the wife. They didn't have any, and the woman acted like I had just insulted her personally by asking if they did. Then she tried to sell me a matryoshka.

I used to go to this Ukranian grocery store in Sacramento (Citrus Heights)and they had the best cakes & tortes that they sold by the pound.. so lightly, so fluffy, so delicious. I asked the owner if she baked it, but she said that she buys it from someone around San Francisco. I wonder why Americans don't know how to bake pastries like that and insist on covering everything with an overly sweet glaze or buttercream frosting

We have a local Euopean store, heavy on Bosnian stuff and some Russian. Montreal has a huge and excellent Russian store and Alla loves that place (she says we have to go again next week) She buys mostly things not too much affected by dates. Canned stinky fish, buckwheat, frozen vereneki, pelmeni etc. She gets her teas at local health food grocery stores. We also always hit the duty free shop at the border when we return from Canada and she gets her face cream, perfume and some cosmetics there.

I've got the same Vodka and I haven't opened the bottle in 3 years. :innocent: It was a gift, but I don't drink. :bonk: But I love Georgian wine. Republic of Georgia that is. Went to Russian last month and they told me they don't sell Georgian wine. At least in the Ukraine you can always get good Georgian wine.

The Houston General Russian store has very good products, much better than the one in Austin, Texas.

I'm not a big vodka drinker either, but there is just something about the taste of the honey pepper vodka and the Ukrainian brand is much better than others. Generally we use it for ceremonial purposes and I try to limit my intake to three shots. My wife insists that we drink it the traditional way with bread and always have a toast first. I have a friend in Ukraine that says the third toast is always to love. (L) But then, she's a woman and would think that way.

Codeblue 999, open the bottle. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Gary, we checked out the teas at hour local health food store and they were much more expensive that the wide variety of teas we find in the Russian stores. :wow:

We have one shop around here. Decent selection, decent prices - usually must call ahead, especially around the holidays.

I get a "maledets" or "harasho muzh" whenever I stop in to pick up an order she phoned ahead for. Nothing like waiting in line, obviously the only American, for a 1/2 kilo of salad.

Please do not insult American women in the RUB forum. Though we chose not to marry them it is no reason to generalize that they are useless in the kitchen. Reported.

And next they will be saying American women are no good in bed and sloppy looking. Then I will have to pretend to be a Canadian woman attorney married to an Armenian man...and go to the site related forum and start a thread about family friendliness...where is the Armenian flag thingy?
