SSN receipt ?

You would need the actual SSC - not a receipt.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

I believe I got a letter in the mail saying that I applied for it, but you cannot work until you receive your actual SS card.

When you apply for SSN, will the SS office give you a receipt that indicates you have applied for it ? I am just wondering how you can start working right away before getting the SSN in the mail.

Thank you

You can't work with just a SSN what visa re you here with? You will need EAD to work and your SSN should only take a week or 2 to arrive

Thanks everybody.

The person has a green card.

This is from http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10181.html:

Do I need a Social Security number before I start working?

We do not require you to have a Social Security number before you start work. However, the Internal Revenue Service requires employers to report wages using a Social Security number. While you wait for your Social Security number, your employer can use a letter from us stating that you applied for a number

So, it looks like you can use a letter from them that states that you have applied for a number ?

Is this the letter that Moosker is referring to that he got in the mail ?

After you go to the SS office, do they give you any letter also that states that you applied for the number ?
