in reference to steve irwin (RIP), gosh, let it go. let the man rest in peace. there are people that loved him, hated him, felt nothing either way... but at least have a tiny teensy weeny bit of respect for someone's son, husband, father and friend that died in a sudden and quite painful fashion. no one deserves to go out like that... and tearing him to pieces now is just... sad.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I'm sure Steve was a nice enough guy and did a lot to raise awareness about conservation issues - nothing against him personally, dying in pursuit of something you love is perhaps better than wasting your life working dull jobs you hate. Still, he was clearly a controversial figure and took a lot of risks that were perhaps unnecessary - the baby incident in particular lost him a lot of supporters.

These days, if Britney Spears can get hauled over the coals (and receive a visit from child protective services) for holding her baby on her lap while driving a car, holding your kid out over a crocodile would seem to have something of a larger question mark over it, no?

Erekose,

Just to clarify things, he didn't hold his 1 month child OUT OVER a crocodile, he had his child firmly held in his other arm whilst FEEDING a crocodile with his other hand. Whilst many people thought his actions were irresponsible I firmly beleive and agree with his remarks that at all times "he kept a safe working distance between himself and the croc".........

I agree with many posters on here that bashing this guy when he died so tragically is pretty low. OK so he did have some pretty controversial methods in his programs..... but he did more to educate a generation about wildlife conservation that most others have, and he was passionate about it.......... and to the original poster of this thread........ I am a marine biologist and a conservationist.... you said that there are many people out there who do a lot of work behind the scenes..... I agree that their work is important............. but Steve Irwin acheived more about EDUCATING kids and making them aware and passionate about the wildlife of Australia and beyond than any of these other conservationists........

so lay off slagging the guy and give him the respect he deserves.

Geeeez.. IMHO ...Heroic or not, people should leave him alone ! The man is dead and its unfair to him :( He cannot answer all those question now and justify what he did-either its right or wrong. Rest In Peace Steve (F)(F)(F) .

Well said Luz. Unfortunately that won't happen...there will be many more to come that will be judgmental about Steve. It's much easier to trash a dead person because they aren't here to defend themselves. The thing is, some people have to have something to gripe about or else they aren't happy.

Wow, so it took less than a week for someone to actually start trampling on the man's grave. Jeez...

I figured it would be a lot sooner than a week!

Proverbs 12:10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel

Steve Irwin bothered animals in their natural habitat and nature finally fought back and owned him.

Since when do you care what the bible says?

A lot of people will use bible qoutes when it serves their purposes...whether they believe it or not. It's supposedly to make them appear more credible I guess.

Most parents wouldn't put their kid within 5 feet of a crocodile that wasn't behind a 6 inch glass screen, let alone feed one whilst holding a baby. I don't think anyone will say that those animals are totally predictable - quite the opposite, and having watched his show and seeing Irwin almost get caught on a number of occasions, its hard to claim how that is not irresponsible.

It's not as if Steve Irwin has made the sole or most profound contribution to naturalism and conservation - he had a TV show that was accessible to a lot of people, specifically young people. That's great - but he also took a lot of risks some might have considered un-necessary in pursuit of that. Why? Because the Jerry Springer generation demand increasingly sensationalist forms of entertainment - and it was only a matter of time before naturalism was approached in a similar manner. I mean we now have shows like Fear Factor and Dog the Bounty Hunter - is that his fault? No - but that's the only way to popular it seems.

I don't have anything against the bloke - but I remember thinking when I first saw him holding one of the most venomous snakes in the world by the tail that it probably wasn't the best of ideas and that it was only a matter of time before there was an accident. As I said its an irony that he was killed by an animal that isn't usually deadly...

I was very surprised it was a stingray that killed him. There was a report Monday from Seal Beach on the local news where nine people were treated for ray stings that day. And that was a typical day. They also interviewed a marine biologist at the Aquarium of the Pacific, and he said he had only heard of one other fatality from a sting ray.

What happened to Steve was a freak accident. Hell, when we were in Maui I swam after rays. Someone on TV said it was a one in a million chance, and I believe it.

There are 17 recorded deaths from stingrays, WORLDWIDE, TOTAL.

Now its 18 recorded deaths lol from stingrays lol.

There are always two sides. Steve did a lot for animal conservation, but I do feel he did kind of mess with the animals a little more than necessary.
