I opened an account at Citizens bank, not sure if they have it there in SD, but it should work at any other bank too. The teller asked for my passport and driver's license I believe. They'll enter 0's for your SSN, and it should work. I received my bank card and pin number separately in the mail within 3-5 business days.

They have never hasseled me for a SSN since, so not sure you will even need to update the paperwork, unless you're doing direct deposit or something once you start working I'd imagine :)

Good news! After I read about only needing a passport, I told my husband and we decided to head over to the bank after he finished work. (There is no Citizen's bank here, this is a tiny town of 25k people). When I got there, the guy just asked for 2 pieces of identification, so I handed over my passport and my driver's license (which is in French, but it wasn't a problem). Within maybe 30 minutes, I had a checking and savings account! And my first American debit card. It's only a temporary one that lasts 45 days.

I wanted to get a credit card too, but that you need a SSN for, so unfortunately, I have to wait some more :(

Cool :)

Can you use Ben's credit card first, or maybe he can add you to his account? That was what my husband did. In BC, we never had a Visa/Debit card, so when I got the Citizen's card, I was a bit confused lol, it just makes no sense to me as to why it is also a Visa, since we keep that separate in BC (Cash vs. Credit). So, in the end, you'll need to have sufficient funds regardless if you are using it as a Visa or a Debit card. For christmas, my husband added me to his Capital one account and I finally had my own actual credit card! Although I still use my RBC Visa because of the current exchange rate :)

I could always use his credit card, but I'd rather have my own to use. The only reason I want one right away is to buy a new computer. I could always use my new debit card, but the credit card I was looking at offers 1% cash back, and that's a lot on a ~ $700 purchase, compared to much smaller purchases. *impatiently waits for her SSN*

I just mean use his, give him the cash for it (get him some points or rewards vs using your debit card). The 1% cash back sounds great, is that with Bank of America? Btw, when did you cancel your MSP?

Yeah, but he doesn't have a credit card with rewards, so that's why I'm waiting till I get a SSN, apply for the credit card, then use it so I can get 1% back.

And there's no Bank of America here either. We're both with Wells Fargo, the biggest bank here in his town.

And what's MSP? blink.gif

Ohh lol, I keep on forgetting that you're in a small town now...

MSP = Medical Services Plan...maybe that's just for British Columbia, my bad lol. It's just a mandatory plan you pay monthly for basic health care.

Yeah, super small town here laughing.gif

And yeah, that must be for BC only :P

Although I have to start notifying agencies that I'm not in Canada anymore and change my address with a bunch of places.

You just need to wait for it to be paid since it's still in process. It's the same portal where you paid the invoices. There are some guides on here that'll go in detail about the different processes, I don't have the links on hand, but if you do a search, I'm sure you'll come across them :)

The only way you'll know if the AOS package was approved is if you call them and ask. And they don't wait for both packages before reviewing. As soon as they receive a package, they'll start reviewing it.

I don't think the payment portal is updated instantly when they finish their review. Because I've heard of cases where people have gotten CCs, but no SIFs.

And you only get a case complete email if you did electronic processing. For those that aren't eligible for EP (or chose not to do it), you will only find out of CC from either the AVR or an operator.
