Politico's headline - John Boehner gas gaffe creates opening for Democrats

So what was this 'gaffe'?

House Speaker John Boehner said Monday he’s prepared to consider curbing long-standing tax breaks used by oil and gas companies as part of the effort to cut the federal budget deficit, signaling a softening of the Republican position on the issue.

“It’s certainly something we should be looking at,” Mr. Boehner said in an interview with ABC World News. “We’re in a time when the federal government’s short on revenues. They ought to be paying their fair share.”

How is this a gaffe? This makes perfect sense!

I would guess the gaffe is that Republicans in general have not supported eliminating these tax breaks. The article says the GOP position is that gas companies will pass the cost on to consumers. On the other hand the Democrats have already been trying to cut these subsidies.

So Boehner will now have to address why he's talking like a Democrat.
