NEW YORK – A brawl involving cricket bats and small swords at a Sikh temple in New York City has led to riot and assault charges against seven people.

Police say the defendants interrupted prayer services at the Baba Makhan Shah Lubana Sikh Center in Queens on Sunday. They were arraigned Monday.

Temple president Jamail Singh told the Daily News that the fight was instigated by a dissident group of followers who are opposed to opening up membership.

The dispute is at the center of a lawsuit in state Supreme Court.

Some of those arrested Sunday also were charged with disrupting a religious service.

What I don't get, is why did those people bring swords and cricket bats with them inside a church.

What I don't get, is why did those people bring swords and cricket bats with them inside a church.

sikhs carry swords. it's a thing. I think they technically cannot carry the big swords here so some carry a small knife instead.

as for the cricket bats...maybe they were going to play a game of cricket!

Sikh men often carry ritual knives. Not sure how ritualistic the cricket bats are, tho.

I thought the swords were for ceremony type stuff and the knives were for carrying all the time?

The short sword is worn by Sikhs round the world. When it's not proscribed by law or work safety regs.

Cricket bats? Tis a fav sport, you find softball bats inside a Babtist Church for the softball teams - same same.
